Qualcomm’s QSC1100 was a historical single-chip platform designed for CDMA2000 handsets, with the goal of reducing the components and board area needed to build a phone. Embedded.com reported Qualcomm’s claim that the integration could save more than 50% of board area and help reduce bill-of-materials cost. That was a product claim, not an independently measured result, and the available account describes expected sampling in 2007—not present-day availability.
What a single-chip handset solution combines
A handset normally relies on multiple components to handle cellular signaling, radio transmission and reception, power control, and data storage. The QSC1100 brought the baseband modem, RF transceiver, power management, and system memory together on one IC, according to Embedded.com’s account of Qualcomm’s platform.
The engineering rationale is straightforward: fewer separate components can reduce the board space a design requires and may simplify the parts list. The actual cost and performance of a finished handset would still depend on the wider design and manufacturing process; the reported integration figures do not establish a measured retail-price reduction.

How it compared with other integration strategies
Single-chip integration was one of several ways handset makers and suppliers pursued lower-cost designs in the mid-2000s. Contemporary coverage also discussed modules and multichip solutions; the preferred approach depended on cost, footprint, and feature trade-offs rather than on integration alone. EE Times’ coverage of handset design strategies provides that broader period context.
Texas Instruments described a separate single-chip effort in an August 8, 2005 announcement. It targeted GSM/GPRS voice-centric mass-market phones and used 90nm CMOS and DRP technology. It was a different radio family and product effort—not a specification for Qualcomm’s CDMA2000 QSC1100.
| Historical platform example | Radio target | Integration or process detail | Development-stage detail in the cited account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm QSC1100 | CDMA2000 | Baseband, RF transceiver, power management, and memory on one IC; 65nm | Sampling expected in the second half of 2007 |
| Texas Instruments single-chip effort | GSM/GPRS | 90nm CMOS and DRP technology | The 2005 vendor announcement describes the design and sampling context; it does not establish current availability |
| Modules and multichip designs | Varied by design | Alternative integration approaches discussed in contemporary coverage | Specific sampling status is not stated in the cited EE Times coverage |
What the emerging-markets context means
In 2005–2006, suppliers were pursuing designs for price-sensitive markets where lower handset cost was an important goal. The TI announcement framed its separate GSM/GPRS effort as a way to extend access to wireless communication. Its population-coverage and subscriber figures were historical estimates cited in 2005, not current measures of connectivity.
The lasting engineering point is narrower than a claim that one chip automatically makes a phone inexpensive: integration can reduce component count and board footprint, but handset economics depend on the complete product and its production context. The historical sources describe the strategy and its intended advantages, not the current handset market.

Is the QSC1100 available today?
The Embedded.com article says sampling was expected in the second half of 2007. That schedule alone does not verify that the chip sampled, entered volume production, remains supported, or can be purchased now. The cited TI announcement likewise describes a 2005 effort and does not establish present-day supply. These sources do not identify a currently available QSC1100 handset, evaluation board, or development kit.
