Phison’s E26 is a PCIe 5.0 SSD controller platform, not a complete SSD, and Phison did not claim that it would deliver 16 GB/s. Its January 2022 announcement said the platform could scale beyond 10 GB/s; a later Phison consumer brochure lists maximum sequential speeds of 14,000 MB/s read and 11,800 MB/s write. Those are vendor specifications, not independent test results.
What is the Phison E26?
PS5026-E26 is Phison’s controller architecture for PCIe 5.0 SSDs. A controller is a component inside a drive, not a standalone consumer SSD you can install. Phison described the E26 platform as customizable for consumer and enterprise products, with planned formats including M.2, U.3, E1.S, and E3.S. M.2 is the form factor most relevant to desktop and laptop upgrades, but the E26 name alone does not identify a particular retail drive.
Phison first announced development of its customizable Gen5 platform on September 28, 2021, describing it as suitable for client and enterprise SSDs and targeting customized product shipments in the second half of 2022. How fast is the E26?
Phison’s January 3, 2022 CES announcement said E26 could “scale beyond 10GB/s.” It did not say 16 GB/s. The distinction matters: “beyond 10” describes the platform’s announced capability, while a specific maximum requires a stated configuration and a source for the figure. A later Phison consumer brochure, indexed in search results and dated December 2022, lists up to 14,000 MB/s sequential read and 11,800 MB/s sequential write for an E26 drive platform. The figures are vendor specifications, and Phison cautions that performance varies with system configuration and test conditions. They should not be treated as independent benchmark results; the linked brochure PDF was not accessible for direct verification.

Why does PCIe 5.0 matter?
In its September 2021 announcement, Phison compared PCIe Gen5’s lane rate of 32 Gb/s with Gen4’s 16 Gb/s. That is a per-lane rate comparison, not an SSD’s measured file-transfer speed. Actual drive performance also depends on the drive’s design and configuration, the host system, the workload, and test conditions. A platform specification therefore cannot guarantee that every E26-based product will deliver the same result.

Will an E26 SSD work in a Gen4 slot?
Phison described the E26 platform as backward-compatible with Gen4. That supports the general expectation that a Gen5 drive can operate in a compatible Gen4 environment, but it does not guarantee that any particular motherboard, slot, or drive combination will work at Gen5 speeds—or support every feature. A Gen4 slot also limits the connection to Gen4 capability. Check the exact SSD’s specifications and the motherboard manual for slot generation, lane allocation, and any platform-specific restrictions.
Does AMD or Micron guarantee compatibility?
In May 2022, Phison announced a PCIe Gen5 ecosystem collaboration involving AMD’s AM5 platform, Phison’s E26 controller, and Micron memory and NAND. What should you check before buying an E26-based drive?
Shop for a complete SSD, not the controller name by itself. Confirm the exact drive model’s controller, form factor, capacity, and manufacturer-rated read and write speeds. Also check the host slot’s generation and lane configuration, the drive’s cooling and power requirements, and whether the listed maximums match the workloads you care about. A quoted peak sequential speed does not establish sustained performance or predict results for every task.
The available Phison material establishes platform announcements and vendor specifications, but not current retail model mapping, live prices, availability, or independent comparisons. Verify any prospective product against its manufacturer’s exact model documentation rather than assuming an SSD uses E26 because it is marketed as PCIe 5.0.
