When did Epson Toyocom start operations?
Seiko Epson’s 2006 annual report says Epson Toyocom commenced full-scale operations on October 1, 2005. Trade publication EDN reported the day before that the company was scheduled to begin operations the following day. Seiko Epson Corporation, Annual Report 2006; EDN, September 30, 2005.
Why did Epson and Toyocom combine their businesses?
The integration joined complementary strengths. Seiko Epson contributed its quartz-device business and experience with consumer timing devices; Toyo Communication Equipment Co., Ltd. (Toyocom) brought expertise in industrial devices. Seiko Epson said the combination would unite product portfolios and production facilities, including volume-production capacity, microfabrication, and high-precision fabrication. Those were the company’s stated aims and expected benefits, not independently measured results. Seiko Epson Corporation, Annual Report 2006.
The strategy was to use those capabilities together to develop higher-value offerings. EDN reported that the new company aimed to become the world’s largest supplier of quartz crystals and oscillators; that was a launch-era goal, not evidence that it achieved that position. EDN, September 30, 2005.

What did Epson Toyocom make?
Seiko Epson described three product areas: timing, sensing, and optical devices. The categories served different functions in electronic equipment:

What was the scale of the quartz-device business?
EDN’s September 30, 2005 report put the partners’ combined quartz-device sales at ¥84 billion in fiscal 2004. The same article estimated the global quartz-device market at ¥300–350 billion and the combined businesses’ share at about 25%. These are contemporary reported figures: the market size and share were EDN estimates based on the figures stated in that article, not current market measurements. EDN, September 30, 2005.

Epson’s corporate histories record later milestones, rather than a complete account of the company’s present structure. Epson Toyocom became a wholly owned Seiko Epson subsidiary in 2009. Seiko Epson later absorbed certain Epson Toyocom operations in April 2012, and transferred its optical-products business to HOYA in 2013.
