Ping measures how long a probe’s request-and-reply trip takes; jitter describes how packet delay varies; packet loss counts probes that fail to arrive as expected. Together, they offer clues about a connection, not a standalone diagnosis: each result depends on the target, measurement method, direction, and time observed.

What ping measures

Ping is a diagnostic application commonly used to send an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo request to an IP destination and wait for an Echo reply. The reply shows that the destination responded to that particular probe. It does not establish that a website, game, DNS service, or other application is working, because those use different services and traffic.

The reported time is generally the round-trip delay for the request and reply. It includes both the outward and return paths, which may not behave identically. Do not assume that dividing the result by two gives the one-way delay.

Ping tests reachability from the side that starts the probe; it is not a mutual test. Also, routers or firewalls may filter or treat ICMP differently from other traffic. A timeout therefore does not necessarily mean a destination is offline, and a reply confirms only an ICMP response. See RFC 7276 for ping as an IP continuity check.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What jitter means

Jitter is commonly used to mean variation in packet delay. The term does not identify one universal calculation, so readings from different tools may not be directly comparable.

Why the metric matters

In its network-benchmarking context, IETF RFC 4689 defines jitter as the absolute difference between the forwarding delays of two consecutive received packets in the same stream. RFC 5481 notes that multiple packet-delay-variation formulations exist and prefers the more precise term “delay variation.” Check a tool’s stated calculation and summary statistic before comparing its jitter number with another tool’s.

What packet loss means

Packet loss is the count or proportion of expected packets that were not received according to the measurement’s timing and sequence criteria. It is separate from delay: delay summaries may describe only packets that arrived, so loss must be measured and reported independently.

Ping commonly measures a two-way exchange. If a request or reply fails to complete, the probe can register as lost; that result alone does not identify which direction or network segment was responsible. A round-trip loss reading can reflect a problem on the local Wi-Fi, a router, an ISP path, the destination, or filtering, but it does not prove any one of those causes. ICMP probes may also receive different treatment from other traffic. The measurement limits are discussed in RFC 4689 and RFC 5481.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

How to interpret the three signals together

Signal What it tells you What it does not establish
Ping time How long successful probe exchanges took, generally round-trip. A specific cause of delay, one-way delay, or whether an application works.
Jitter How packet delay varies under the tool’s selected definition. A directly comparable value across tools with different metrics or summaries.
Packet loss How many or what share of expected probes failed under the measurement criteria. Where the packet disappeared or which direction was affected.

Higher or less consistent delay can affect interactive responsiveness, while variation can matter to real-time traffic. But no one signal identifies a fault by itself. RFC 4689 cautions that forwarding delay is not an absolute indicator of congestion and establishes no universal delay threshold that proves congestion is present or absent.

How to compare measurements usefully

  1. Record the context. Note the destination, probe protocol, whether the result is round-trip or one-way, the observation period, and whether the summary is a mean, maximum, range, or percentile.
  2. Repeat the observation. A brief sample describes only that interval, not a permanent property of the connection.
  3. Compare more than one target. Where feasible, compare a local gateway with an external destination. These probes cover different portions of the route; a pattern can narrow possibilities but does not prove which component failed.
  4. Keep methods consistent. When comparing tools, use the same targets and time windows, and the same protocol and packet behavior where possible. Check how each tool calculates jitter and counts loss.

These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not a substitute for further evidence about a particular network. The standards document the measurement concepts and their limitations; they do not provide a universal consumer threshold for a “good” result.
