Infineon has announced radiation-hardened ferroelectric RAM (F-RAM) products designed for space systems: a 2 Mb serial-interface device in 2022, followed by 1 Mb and 2 Mb parallel-interface devices in 2024. The announcements describe intended applications and manufacturer-stated specifications; they do not identify a spacecraft mission that has flown these specific parts.
What Infineon announced
The product family arrived in two steps, with different interfaces and packages.
| Announcement | Devices and package | Manufacturer-stated uses |
|---|---|---|
| April 14, 2022 | 2 Mb SPI F-RAM; 16-pin ceramic SOP | Mission-critical data logging, telemetry storage, command-and-control calibration data, and boot-code storage for microcontrollers, FPGAs, and ASICs |
| June 18, 2024 | 1 Mb and 2 Mb parallel F-RAM; 44-lead ceramic TSOP | Sensor and instrument data, calibration logging, secure-key storage, and boot-code storage |
Infineon called the 2022 part the space industry’s first radiation-hardened serial-interface F-RAM and described the 2022 and 2024 products as QML-V qualified. Those are product-announcement claims, not evidence of a named flight deployment. Infineon’s 2022 announcement and 2024 announcement give the launch details.
Specifications Infineon published
2022 2 Mb SPI device
Infineon specified 10 trillion read/write cycles, data retention of 120 years at 85°C, an operating voltage of 2.0–3.6 V, maximum operating current of 10 mA, and a temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. The company reported total ionizing dose (TID) greater than 150 krad(Si), single-event latch-up (SEL) greater than 114 MeV·cm²/mg at 115°C, single-event-upset (SEU) immunity, and single-event functional interrupt (SEFI) below 1.34 × 10⁻⁴ errors per device-day.
#1 Best Overall
2024 parallel devices
For the parallel parts, Infineon stated up to 120-year data retention at 85°C, programming voltage down to 2 V, maximum operating current of 20 mA, and 10¹³ write cycles. For the QML-V-qualified devices, it reported TID greater than 150 krad(Si), SEL greater than 96 MeV·cm²/mg at 115°C, SEU immunity, and SEFI below 1.34 × 10⁻⁴ errors per device-day in active/standby mode, with immunity in sleep mode.
These figures are manufacturer-published specifications for the announced devices; they should not be assumed to apply to every Infineon F-RAM. Radiation test metrics describe different failure mechanisms, so a radiation rating is not a single measure of suitability for every orbit or mission. Engineers should verify test conditions and limits against the exact part’s controlled documentation.

Why use F-RAM for space data logging?
F-RAM is nonvolatile memory: it retains data without continuous power. Infineon describes its storage mechanism as a change in atomic state, contrasting it with the trapped-charge programming approach it attributes to EEPROM. The company’s stated case for F-RAM is its write endurance and power characteristics for applications that update data frequently, such as calibration records and logs. These are vendor comparisons, not universal results across all memory products or operating conditions.
Frequent updates matter in a spacecraft because logs and calibration values may need to be refreshed throughout the system’s operating life. Infineon’s Helmut Puchner has described memory as needing to tolerate frequent updates over a satellite lifetime; that context does not establish a lifetime guarantee for a particular part. The EE Times interview provides additional design context in its coverage of Infineon putting F-RAM in space.

Infineon says the write endurance can eliminate the need for wear leveling in suitable applications. Whether that simplifies a design depends on the application’s write pattern, required integrity, and system architecture; it is not a reason to omit system-level fault handling or data protection without analysis.
Choosing between SPI and parallel F-RAM
SPI: fewer connections, serial transfer
SPI is a serial interface. Infineon says its lower pin count can reduce footprint and ease integration with space-grade processors, FPGAs, and ASICs. The 2022 announced device is the SPI option in the QML-V announcements.

Parallel: a different bus trade-off
The 2024 parts use a parallel interface. Infineon highlights random access and full-memory writes at bus speeds for these devices. That interface may fit systems designed around a parallel memory bus, but requires evaluating the board and processor interface alongside the memory’s performance needs.
For a design comparison, evaluate the exact SKU against the system’s density, interface, package and board constraints, write frequency, retention requirement, operating and programming power budgets, radiation environment, temperature range, and qualification needs. A headline endurance or TID figure alone does not settle the choice.

Do not confuse the QML-V devices with the NewSpace line
Infineon’s later NewSpace materials describe a separate product and qualification context. Its brochure lists CYEL15B102Q-SXM as a 2 Mbit SPI F-RAM in an 8-pin SOIC package and CYEL15B102N-SZ60XM as a 2 Mbit parallel F-RAM in a 44-pin TSOP II package; both are listed at 50 krad(Si) TID. The brochure also lists a 256 Kbit serial I2C F-RAM, CYEL15B256J-SXE, rated for -40°C to 125°C and 50 krad(Si). The two 2 Mbit parts are listed for -55°C to 125°C. See the Infineon NewSpace memory products brochure.
These NewSpace parts should not be treated as the same devices as the 2022 and 2024 QML-V-qualified announcements simply because the memory technology or capacity is similar. Compare the exact part number, package, qualification status, radiation rating, and temperature grade. Infineon’s 2025 announcement places NewSpace F-RAM alongside QSPI NOR Flash and pseudo-static RAM (pSRAM), listing TID ratings of 50 krad(Si) for F-RAM, 30 krad(Si) for NOR Flash, and 100 krad(Si) for pSRAM; temperature ranges vary by family. Its statement that nearly 10,000 satellites currently circle Earth in low Earth orbit is an Infineon figure, not an independently established count in the announcement. Infineon’s 2025 portfolio announcement provides that context.
What the announcements establish—and what they do not
Infineon has positioned F-RAM for space-system logging, telemetry, sensor and instrument data, calibration, boot code, and secure-key storage. Its 2024 announcement argues that more space applications process data on-system rather than sending it to the ground via telemetry, increasing demand for nonvolatile memory paired with space-grade processors and FPGAs. The announcements document intended use cases and stated product characteristics, but do not name a spacecraft mission using these exact devices.
For procurement or design-in, check the current datasheet and qualification documentation for the exact ordering code. Infineon’s portfolio page describes a longevity program for selected products and directs users to its HiRel support resources, but those portfolio-level statements do not establish availability or qualification for every F-RAM SKU. Infineon’s NewSpace portfolio page has the company’s current program information.
