Alpha, ZV and RX are useful clues to where a camera sits in Sony’s lineup; suffixes such as R and S distinguish Alpha 7 branches; and Roman numerals or digits commonly mark model generations. These patterns help narrow down what to compare, but Sony does not publish one universal decoder for every letter and number in every camera name. Check the exact model’s specifications before drawing conclusions.
How to read a Sony camera name
Think of a Sony camera name as a set of clues rather than a code that can be decoded perfectly one character at a time. A public-facing name such as Alpha 7R V identifies a family and variant. A technical code such as ILCE-7M4 is used in product support and manuals. Sony’s catalogs show both kinds of names, but the technical code is not a uniform formula that explains every product.
For a particular camera, use the full public-facing model name to find Sony’s product page, then confirm the exact model and specifications on its support page. Do not assume that a letter or number means the same thing across every Sony family.
What Alpha, ZV and RX tell you
Alpha, ZV and RX are broad product-family names. They provide a first clue about the camera’s place in Sony’s catalog, not a complete specification or a guarantee of how it will suit a particular photographer.

| Family | What the name helps identify | What to verify on the exact model |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha | Sony’s Alpha camera family includes interchangeable-lens models, including Alpha 7, Alpha 9 and Alpha 1 lines. | Sensor format, lens mount, resolution, autofocus, video features and controls. |
| ZV | A family that includes creator-focused cameras. Sony describes the Alpha ZV-E10 II as an APS-C interchangeable-lens camera for content creators. | Whether the specific model has interchangeable lenses, its sensor format, and the shooting features it provides. |
| RX | A family that includes compact cameras; Sony’s support catalog, for example, lists the compact RX100M7. | Lens, sensor, controls, video features and other model-specific specifications. |
These are family-level clues, not substitutes for specifications. A name alone does not tell you every important difference between two cameras.
What the letters mean in Alpha 7 names
Within the Alpha 7 family, suffix letters distinguish variants. Sony lists Alpha 7R V and Alpha 7S III as separate models. The differences visible in Sony’s specifications support a practical shorthand for these branches, but do not establish that the letters are literal abbreviations or that every generation follows precisely the same priorities.
R: a resolution-oriented branch
Sony’s specifications for the original-generation α7R list larger full-frame image dimensions than those for the α7S. That supports treating R as a useful clue to a resolution-oriented variant in this family. Compare the exact models’ resolution and other specifications rather than relying on the letter alone.
S: a sensitivity- and video-oriented branch
Sony’s original-generation α7S specifications list expanded ISO sensitivity up to 409600. This is evidence of that model’s sensitivity range, not a claim that every S camera has the same maximum or that sensitivity is its only distinguishing feature. Check the specific model’s still-photo and video specifications.

Do not assume that every letter in an Alpha name has a fixed meaning across all Alpha families. Likewise, family names such as Alpha 9 or Alpha 1 do not provide a complete comparison with Alpha 7 models. For a buying decision, look up the exact cameras and compare the features relevant to your use.

What Roman numerals and digits mean
Roman numerals and appended digits commonly distinguish generations. Examples include α7 IV, α7R V, ILCE-7M4 and ILCE-7M5. These names indicate different models, but a higher numeral does not by itself show which feature changed or mean that every feature improved.
Compare the two specific generations on the things that matter to you:
- Sensor format and resolution
- Autofocus and burst performance
- Video modes and recording features
- Stabilization, controls and handling
- Lens mount and available lenses
- Size, battery and storage compatibility
- Price for the models you are considering
Sony’s account of the RX100 series describes reviewing each new model for possible changes and adding features across versions. That history is another reason not to treat a generation number as a summary of the changes: check the specifications for each model.

How to read Sony camera support codes
Technical codes such as ILCE-7M4 and ILCE-7M5 appear in Sony support material and manuals, while DSC-RX100M7 is an example from the compact-camera range. These codes are useful for identifying the exact product in support searches. They are not a dependable, universal character-by-character decoder for all Sony bodies.
When searching for a manual, firmware information or compatibility details, use the complete model code printed for your camera. Similar-looking names can refer to different models or generations; confirm the exact match before applying instructions or checking an accessory’s compatibility.

Sony lens names are more explicit than body codes
Lens names contain several practical clues that Sony documents more directly. Those clues describe the lens, not the camera body.
| Label or number | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| E | An APS-C lens format. |
| FE | Compatibility with a 35 mm full-frame sensor. |
| SEL | A prefix used for Sony E-mount lenses. |
| Focal length in millimeters | A range such as 24–70 mm indicates a zoom lens; a single focal-length number indicates a single-focal-length lens. |
| F-number | The widest aperture, or minimum F-value, given in the lens name. A smaller number means a faster lens. |
| OSS | In-lens Optical SteadyShot. |
| G and GM | Sony lens product lines. |
| ZA | A Zeiss Alpha lens. |
| Macro | Macro capability. |
| II or 2 | A second generation. |
These labels identify formats, features or product lines; they are not a single ranking of lens quality. Check the full lens specifications for its practical performance and compatibility with your camera.
Check mount and sensor-format compatibility
Sony’s A-mount and E-mount are different systems. E-mount lenses are the standard lenses for Sony mirrorless bodies. Sony says an A-mount lens can be attached to an E-mount body with an adapter, but some functions may be limited; E-mount lenses cannot be used on A-mount bodies.
Sensor format matters even when the mount combination is supported. Sony says APS-C and full-frame E-mount camera-and-lens combinations can be interchangeable, with caveats. On a full-frame body, an APS-C lens produces an APS-C/Super 35-size image when the camera is set to crop accordingly. Physical fit therefore does not necessarily mean that the lens uses the full sensor area.
Before choosing a lens or adapter, check Sony’s compatibility information for the exact body and lens, including any firmware or function limitations.
How to compare two Sony cameras
- Identify the exact models. Record the full public name and, where useful for support, the technical model code.
- Confirm family and format. Check whether each is an interchangeable-lens camera or compact, and verify sensor format and lens mount.
- Compare specifications that match your use. Look at resolution, autofocus, burst performance, video modes, stabilization, controls, battery and storage compatibility.
- Check lens and accessory compatibility. Confirm the mount, crop behavior, adapter limitations and any firmware caveats for your specific combination.
- Compare the actual models and prices available to you. A suffix or generation number cannot make this decision on its own.
Sony’s design account describes the Alpha 7 approach as giving photographers a shared family identity while letting them choose models according to the photos they want to make and the features they need. That is helpful context for the family, not a technical definition of its model codes.
