Check your flight on both Dubai Airports’ flight-status page and your airline’s app or website before leaving for the airport. For rebooking, care, or a refund, contact the operating airline—and the travel agent or partner that issued your ticket if you booked through one. UAE rules set specific care requirements, but they do not guarantee a fixed cash payment for every delay or cancellation.
What to do first when your Dubai flight is disrupted
- Verify the flight directly. Search by flight number, airline, or city on Dubai Airports’ flight-information page, then check the operating airline’s own status and messages. Status can change quickly, so do not rely only on a third-party tracker.
- Save the notice and details. Keep the airline’s email, SMS, or app notification. Note when it arrived and any revised departure or arrival time. These details can help establish what the airline told you and when.
- Follow the airline’s latest travel instructions. Do not head to the airport solely because a general guide says to arrive early. Dubai Airports’ general FAQ recommends arriving at least three hours before departure, but a flight-specific airline instruction about a confirmed disruption may change what you should do. - Ask the airline what happens to your booking. Confirm whether you have been rebooked, whether the new flight is ticketed, and what alternatives or refund options apply. If an agent or partner airline issued your ticket, contact that company too; it may need to process a change or refund.
- If you are waiting or stranded, ask about care. Ask staff about meals, drinks, communications, accommodation, and transport for your specific delay. Keep receipts and written responses, but do not assume every expense will be reimbursed.
- For a connection, explain how it was booked. Tell the airline whether the affected flights are on one ticket or separate bookings, and ask it to confirm what protection or rerouting applies to your itinerary.
What UAE rules say about delay care
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority’s Passenger Welfare Program, CAR-PWP Issue 02 applies to commercial air transport operators flying from or to UAE airports and to UAE airport operators. Disruptions at airports outside the UAE are subject to local rules. The program sets care obligations according to delay length and whether passengers are waiting in the terminal or already on the aircraft; these are care provisions, not a blanket cash-compensation schedule.
Terminal delays
- 1 to 3 hours after scheduled departure: updated flight-status information.
- An anticipated delay of 3 to 8 hours: updated status, free meals and refreshments appropriate to the waiting time, and appropriate communication means. Hotel accommodation is specified for passengers who miss a connection and whose next probable connection is more than 8 hours away.
- An anticipated delay exceeding 8 hours: hotel accommodation, meals and refreshments, communication means, and transport between the airport and accommodation.
Delays on the tarmac
- 1 to 3 hours: updated status information.
- 3 to 8 hours: the program adds an opportunity to disembark, subject to local rules, along with meals and refreshments, communication means, and accommodation for passengers who miss a connection.
- More than 8 hours: disembarkation subject to local rules, hotel accommodation, meals and refreshments, communication means, and transport between the airport and hotel.
What to expect if the airline cancels your flight
Under the GCAA program, the airline should inform passengers as soon as practicable and provide care as appropriate. It should carry passengers and their baggage on another flight with available space as soon as practicable. It must also provide an option for a return flight or rerouting within a reasonable time; another airline may be used subject to availability, or the parties may agree on another means and class of carriage. The program says these cancellation provisions apply to transit flights and flights that do not originate in the passenger’s city of residence or domicile.
The program defines eligibility for cancellation welfare under this provision as a cancellation within 48 hours of scheduled departure. That definition concerns the program’s welfare provisions; it does not, by itself, settle every contractual or other legal claim a passenger might have.

Airline policies can change your practical options
Regulatory care requirements and an airline’s own rebooking process are different things. The carrier’s policy, who issued the ticket, and the circumstances of the disruption affect what you can do next.
Emirates
Emirates says it sends disruption notifications by email and SMS to the contact details on the booking. It says it first tries to move affected passengers to the next available Emirates flight and asks them to contact the airline about alternatives. Some Dubai connections lasting between 10 and 24 hours may qualify for Dubai Connect, subject to eligibility and entry requirements. For bookings made directly with Emirates, its flight-status and Manage Your Booking page provides a refund route. If an agent issued the ticket, Emirates directs passengers to contact that agent. Use the current booking guidance rather than relying on a general or older operational notice.
flydubai
For qualifying cancellations or schedule changes, flydubai describes rebooking to another flydubai flight within 30 days before or after the original travel date at no additional cost, or travel on the next scheduled flight to the same destination. Rebooking more than 30 days away may involve a fare difference. The airline says eligible refunds may be issued as flydubai vouchers, and passengers whose tickets were issued by an agent or partner airline should contact that issuer. The applicable threshold and options depend on the timing and details of the disruption; check flydubai’s flight-disruption policy.

Refunds, compensation, and rights for international itineraries
Do not assume a Dubai delay or cancellation automatically entitles you to cash compensation. The GCAA program establishes passenger-care and rerouting provisions; it does not set a universal fixed compensation amount. Before choosing a refund, ask what form it takes—cash, voucher, or another option—and whether accepting it affects your remaining travel arrangements.
Other rules may apply depending on the route and carrier. For example, Emirates publishes separate, conditional cancellation rights for flights departing from EU airports. Those provisions include reimbursement or rerouting and certain care, with possible compensation subject to eligibility and exceptions. A trip that includes Dubai is not automatically covered just because Dubai is part of the itinerary. See Emirates’ cancellation notice and check which law applies to your specific flight.

To understand which rules or airline options may apply, have these details ready:
- Operating airline and ticket issuer.
- Departure and arrival countries, and where the disruption occurred.
- Whether the problem is a cancellation, schedule change, delay, or missed connection.
- Whether connecting flights are on one booking or separate tickets.
- How long the delay is, and whether you are in the terminal or on the aircraft.
- What alternative flight is offered and whether any refund is cash or a voucher.
If the airline has not resolved the disruption
Keep your booking confirmation, disruption notifications, revised itineraries, receipts, and records of your requests and the airline’s replies. Ask the airline or ticket issuer to explain its decision in writing and identify the policy or rule it is applying. Dubai Airports’ FAQ advises passengers to contact their insurer about claims involving injury or property damage; review your policy wording for travel-disruption costs rather than assuming they are covered.
