There is no single best AI automation platform for every workflow. Zapier is worth evaluating for managed cross-app automation and a broad app catalog; Make offers a visual scenario builder and an AI agent feature documented as an open beta; n8n is a candidate for teams that value custom logic or self-hosting and can take on the operational work. The right choice depends on the exact apps and actions you need, the degree of control you want, and how each service bills the workflow you plan to run.
What counts as AI automation?
The term covers two distinct patterns. In a fixed workflow, an AI step performs a defined task—such as classifying incoming text or drafting a summary—inside a sequence whose triggers and actions you set. An AI agent can instead decide which action to take based on context. That flexibility can be useful, but it also makes permissions, review, and recovery from incorrect decisions more important.
For consequential actions, design a human review gate rather than letting a model act unchecked. Decide what the AI may read and change, how a person will verify its output, and what the workflow should do when the result is incomplete or wrong.
How to choose a platform
- Verify the whole connection path. Check that the exact app, trigger, action, and authentication method your workflow requires are supported. A vendor’s integration or app count signals catalog breadth; it does not establish that a particular event or action is available.
- Match the workflow structure. For anything beyond a simple trigger and action, check for branches, filters, data transformation, error handling, retries, and execution logs.
- Set the AI boundary. Decide whether you need a fixed AI step or an agent that selects actions. Review model choice, token or credit costs, permissions, human review options, and failure behavior.
- Choose a hosting and technical model. A managed service reduces deployment work. Custom code, API access, or self-hosting may provide more control, but self-hosting adds infrastructure, security, update, and incident-response responsibilities.
- Model the cost using your actual workflow. Estimate monthly volume and count the steps or executions that matter under each vendor’s billing unit. Recheck current prices and plan limits on the vendor’s pricing page before committing.
- Check operational and governance needs. Confirm the selected plan’s history, roles, credential handling, access controls, retention, support, and monitoring. Do not infer enterprise suitability from a feature list alone.

Zapier: consider it for managed cross-app workflows
Zapier defines a Zap as an automated workflow connecting apps and reports 9,000+ integrations in 2026. Its help documentation describes AI by Zapier steps for summarizing, classifying, drafting, and making decisions, as well as agents that work across apps. Those features make it a candidate when you want managed automation across a wide catalog, but you still need to verify the specific trigger and action your workflow depends on. Make describes its service as a visual scenario builder and reports 3,000+ standard apps. Its pricing page says the Free plan includes up to 1,000 credits per month. Credits are tied to module actions: most actions use one credit, while some advanced AI-provider features can use more. Make’s AI Agent (New) documentation says the feature was released on February 2, 2026, and is in open beta. It states that the agent is available on all plans with Make’s AI Provider, while custom AI provider connections are available on paid plans. n8n says its pricing is based on monthly workflow executions regardless of workflow complexity and that its plans include unlimited users, workflows, and integrations. Its pricing page also identifies a standard self-hosted Community Edition available on GitHub. n8n’s agent material describes code support, integrations, self-hosting, and human-in-the-loop controls for technical teams. These are reasons to assess it if you need custom logic or control over deployment. Estimate cost with a real workflow
The billing units are not interchangeable: a Make credit, a Zapier task, and an n8n workflow execution do not represent the same thing. Estimate a representative month by mapping your workflow’s triggers, actions, AI calls, and expected run volume, then calculate it under each platform’s current plan rules.

- Write down the trigger, every action or module, any branches, and the AI calls in the workflow.
- Estimate how often the trigger will run in a typical month, including likely retries or repeated processing where relevant.
- Apply the candidate vendor’s current billing rules and plan limits to that shape; do not convert one platform’s unit into another’s.
- Recheck current prices, allowances, and AI-related charges on the vendor pricing page before purchase, because these terms can change.
Make the final choice around your workflow
- Start with a real workflow and verify every required trigger and action before comparing catalog totals.
- Use a fixed AI step when the task is bounded; consider an agent only when action selection is genuinely needed, with review for meaningful business consequences.
- Choose managed SaaS or self-hosting based on who will maintain credentials, updates, access, monitoring, and incident response.
- Compare likely monthly cost using each platform’s own billing model, current plan limits, and actual workflow shape.
- For Make’s AI Agent (New), confirm the current beta status and terms before relying on it in production.
