A redesigned MacBook Pro could add a touchscreen while becoming thinner, putting pressure on one of the MacBook Air’s familiar advantages: a slim, easy-to-carry design. But reports still expect the Pro to remain thicker than the Air, and Apple has not confirmed a touchscreen MacBook.
What the touchscreen MacBook Pro reports actually say
Macworld’s rumor roundup describes a future high-end MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen and a broader redesign, potentially arriving in late 2026 or early 2027. Those details are reported plans, not an Apple announcement. Apple has not confirmed the touchscreen, OLED display, timing, or redesign. Macworld’s roundup also suggests the redesigned Pro could be thinner but remain slightly thicker than the Air to make room for more powerful hardware.
That makes “steal the Air’s best trick” an interpretation, not a claim that Apple is explicitly copying the Air. If the Pro does slim down, it could narrow the Air’s portability advantage; the reporting does not establish that the Pro will match the Air’s size or thinness. Other rumored features—including a camera cutout, Dynamic Island-style interface, chip details, and the “MacBook Ultra” name—are also unconfirmed.
Will the MacBook Air get a touchscreen?
That remains unresolved. 9to5Mac, relaying reporting from Mark Gurman, says Apple had not decided whether to extend touch to Macs beyond the Pro. An OLED forecast for a future Air around 2028 or later does not establish that the Air will gain touch. The report on the Air’s touchscreen plans therefore points to uncertainty, not a confirmed feature or launch schedule.

What you can use now
The current MacBook Air has no touch input
A March 2026 review of the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air says its display does not support touch. Apple’s stated battery-life figure cited in that review is up to 18 hours of video streaming; that is a specific usage condition, not a promise of the same runtime for every workload. TechRadar’s M5 MacBook Air review discusses the tested model and suggests an iPad Air or iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard for people who want an Apple device with touch and a keyboard.
A touchscreen add-on is a separate accessory
Tom’s Guide describes Intricuit Magic Screen as a magnetic glass layer that sits over a MacBook display and connects through USB-C. It is an add-on, not a built-in Apple touchscreen, so check the accessory’s current availability and compatibility with your exact Mac before considering it. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on with Intricuit Magic Screen describes how the accessory works.

What the rumor could mean for the Air
If Apple releases a thinner touchscreen Pro, the Air may face more direct competition from above: buyers who want touch and a more portable laptop could have less reason to treat those as separate needs. That would not erase the Air’s distinction if the Pro remains thicker, as the reporting currently anticipates. Nor does a touchscreen Pro rumor show that Apple plans to put touch on the Air; that decision is still unsettled in the reporting.
