Neither DDR5-6000 CL30 nor DDR5-6400 is automatically better for every PC. DDR5-6400 has a higher data-transfer rate, but its full timings, compatibility with your CPU and motherboard, capacity, and workload determine whether that advantage matters. Compare complete, supported kits—not just the number on the box.

What the two specifications actually tell you

DDR5-6000 and DDR5-6400 describe rated data-transfer rates of 6000 and 6400 megatransfers per second (MT/s). The 6400 kit has the higher nominal rate. The “CL30” in DDR5-6000 CL30 is its CAS latency: the number of clock cycles involved in a particular memory operation. It is not a complete measure of system memory latency.

DDR5-6400 alone does not identify its CAS timing or other primary timings. A fair comparison requires the complete timing line for each kit, such as CL and the remaining primary timings, as well as the kit’s capacity and configuration. A faster transfer-rate label does not by itself establish that a kit will make applications or games run faster.

Check platform compatibility before choosing

A kit’s rated speed and timings commonly rely on an EXPO or XMP profile. Applying that profile depends on the processor, motherboard, BIOS, and memory configuration. Confirm that the exact kit and intended profile are supported by your system; a profile listed on a product page is not proof that every CPU and board combination will run it at those settings.

For an AMD Ryzen system

AMD’s EXPO overview for socket AM5 Ryzen processors describes memory overclocking profiles. AMD says its Ryzen overclocked memory compatibility list identifies kits tested at rated speed and latency and indicates whether they support EXPO, EXPO Ultra Low Latency, or XMP. Treat the list as a useful compatibility check, not a guarantee for every individual build.

AMD also documents performance-lab testing, as of March 2026, with a Ryzen 7 9700X, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 EXPO memory tested at CL28, CL30, and CL36, and an X870E motherboard among the specified hardware. That description does not report a controlled DDR5-6000 CL30 versus DDR5-6400 comparison, so it cannot establish a universal winner between those options.

For an Intel system

Intel explains that XMP profiles contain preset speed, timing, and voltage settings selected through the BIOS, and advises users to confirm motherboard and module compatibility. Intel also classifies using XMP beyond specifications as memory overclocking. See Intel’s XMP guidance and check the support information for your exact CPU, motherboard, and memory kit.

  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3036F48GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

An Intel Core Ultra memory-timing search result lists DDR5-6000 and DDR5-6400 entries, but the underlying datasheet page was unavailable. That is not enough to conclude that either speed is supported on every Core Ultra desktop processor or motherboard. Verify the specification for your particular model and board.

How the choice can affect games and applications

Memory speed is only one factor in performance. The effect varies by workload and system: a CPU-limited game can respond differently from a game limited by the graphics card, while a memory-intensive application may benefit more from having enough capacity than from a modest speed increase.

PC Gamer’s review of a Core Ultra 9 285K system compared several memory kits, including Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30, across specified gaming and productivity tests. The reviewer found that effects varied by game and that the gap narrowed in more GPU-limited testing. This is evidence about that test setup, not a controlled head-to-head between otherwise identical DDR5-6000 CL30 and DDR5-6400 kits.

Historical tuning guidance also needs context. Igor’sLAB documented a Ryzen 7000 DDR5-6000 CL30 configuration using UCLK=MEMCLK, alongside a separate 2:1 controller configuration, in an article dated September 27, 2022. That is generation-specific information, not a rule for current systems or a direct comparison with DDR5-6400.

Choose a kit for your build

  1. Confirm your platform. Check the processor and motherboard specifications, current BIOS support, and the exact memory kit’s compatibility information.
  2. Set capacity first. Choose enough RAM for your games and applications; for work that needs more memory, adequate capacity can matter more than a small transfer-rate difference.
  3. Compare full specifications. Check capacity, number of DIMMs, rated transfer rate, all listed primary timings, and whether the kit provides the EXPO or XMP profile your system can use.
  4. Consider stability and price. If both kits are supported, compare their complete specifications, the price of the actual products, and independent tests on a similar platform. Be prepared to use a lower setting if the rated profile is unstable on your system.

Which one should you buy?

Choose DDR5-6000 CL30 when its full specifications, price, capacity, and supported profile suit your build. Choose DDR5-6400 when the exact kit’s timings and profile are clear, your platform supports the intended settings, and its price and workload-specific performance make sense. Without those details, DDR5-6400’s higher transfer-rate number alone is not a reason to expect a better PC experience.
