To reset most DISH Network receivers, unplug the receiver’s power cord from the electrical outlet, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Give it time to restart—DISH’s troubleshooting instructions allow up to five minutes for many issues, and up to 10 minutes when restoring guide information. If you have a Hopper and Joey system, reset the Hopper first. A factory-default restore is a separate, more consequential operation, not the usual first step.

How to perform a standard DISH receiver reset

  1. Locate the receiver’s power cord. DISH says it typically has a red tag.
  2. Unplug the cord from the electrical outlet and wait 10 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the cord and let the receiver restart. Allow up to five minutes for many troubleshooting cases; for a guide-information problem, the relevant DISH instructions allow up to 10 minutes.
  4. If the problem persists, use the symptom-specific checks below rather than repeating resets or jumping straight to factory defaults.

DISH calls this a reset or hard reset. Its support instructions distinguish it from restoring factory defaults, but do not specify whether an ordinary power-cycle affects recordings or settings.

Resetting a Hopper, Joey or Wally

Hopper and Joey

Reset the Hopper first. If the Joey still needs attention afterward, unplug the Joey for 10 seconds and reconnect it. For guide issues, check that the Joey is linked to the Hopper; DISH also directs users to perform relevant guide steps from the primary device. See DISH’s Hopper guide troubleshooting instructions.

Wally

DISH’s Wally guide troubleshooting uses the same standard procedure: unplug the receiver for 10 seconds, reconnect it, and let the reset finish.

If the receiver will not turn on

  • Press the receiver’s front-panel power button and check that the power cord is firmly connected at both the receiver and the outlet.
  • If you are using a power strip or surge protector, temporarily connect the receiver directly to a wall outlet to test whether that is contributing to the issue.
  • Make sure the receiver is not enclosed in a cabinet and has at least four inches of space from other electronic devices.
  • If the power light is blinking, DISH says the receiver may be in recovery mode. Recovery can take up to four hours; wait for it to finish before continuing troubleshooting.

These checks follow DISH’s instructions for a Hopper that will not turn on.

If the guide says “No Information Available”

A power-cycle may help, but first check whether a tuner is available. If a receiver is marked as watching or recording, stop the recording or power off the receiver as appropriate, then allow guide data to download. On a Joey, confirm its link to the Hopper and carry out the relevant guide steps on the primary receiver.

DISH also documents a manual guide update: press Home three times, open Tools, and select the Guide update option shown for your receiver. Wait up to 10 minutes for the guide data to load. Menu wording can vary by equipment. See DISH’s guide-information troubleshooting steps and its Hopper-specific instructions.

When to restore factory defaults

Restoring factory defaults is different from unplugging and restarting the receiver: DISH describes it as returning the Hopper to standard factory settings. Do not treat it as a routine reset. If you decide it is appropriate, follow the on-screen instructions for your particular receiver and remote; DISH’s Hopper sequence is:

  2. Select Receiver, then Tools.
  3. Select RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.
  4. Select RESET RECEIVER TO FACTORY DEFAULTS and confirm Yes.

The receiver restarts. These steps are from DISH’s Hopper settings instructions.

Can you reboot the receiver remotely?

DISH documents remote reboot for an internet-connected Hopper with Sling or Hopper 3. In the DISH Anywhere app, go to More > Settings > My Receivers > Receivers > Reset. On dishanywhere.com, sign in, open Account and Devices, then choose Reboot Receiver. DISH says the command may take several minutes. This option is not documented for every receiver model. See DISH’s remote reset instructions.

When to contact DISH

If the receiver still does not work after the relevant troubleshooting steps and wait period, contact DISH support for further help. A factory-default restore is not a universal fix, and DISH recommends further troubleshooting when the issue remains unresolved.
