Choose the approach that meets your app’s platform, feature, interface, performance, accessibility, and ownership requirements—not the one with the broadest promise of code reuse. Cross-platform development can share code, but it does not make every screen, operating-system API, build setting, or behavior identical. Start by listing what the app must do on each target, then test viable approaches against those needs.
What is the difference between native and cross-platform app development?
Native development builds an app for a specific platform using that platform’s tools and APIs. A team might maintain distinct iOS and Android apps. Cross-platform development uses a framework or approach to share some code across platforms. How much is shared—and whether the UI is shared too—depends on the technology and project.
“Cross-platform” does not mean “one implementation with identical behavior everywhere.” A shared-code app may still need platform-specific screens, API integrations, build settings, or interaction details. Apple’s Xcode guidance recommends a multiplatform target when the technologies and project settings overlap considerably; when they do not, separate targets may be a better fit. Apple also advises adapting views and features to each platform.
These labels cover different implementation models. Flutter uses its own rendering engine and offers routes to host-platform APIs; React Native uses JavaScript and native components; Kotlin Multiplatform lets teams share code while retaining native UI where desired. Native development is another candidate, not a universal performance or cost guarantee.

Which platforms and form factors must the app support?
Write down the operating systems and device types required at launch, then include only the additional targets that are real commitments over the app’s expected support horizon. A platform appearing on a framework’s support list does not prove that the resulting product will satisfy its users or your product requirements.
- List required mobile operating systems and minimum supported OS versions.
- Include tablets, desktop, watches, or other device categories only if product requirements call for them.
- For each target, record important device classes and the features users must be able to complete.
- Verify each requirement against current platform documentation and a target-device test matrix. Android’s developer portal covers platform updates, tooling, app quality, and device categories.
Platform boundaries can affect the project structure. Apple’s documented Xcode model allows some targets to share a multiplatform target while keeping watchOS separate. Check target and API availability rather than assuming one project configuration fits every Apple device.
Which operating-system capabilities are essential?
Make an inventory of the capabilities the product actually depends on, not just a list of APIs that might be useful someday. Include sensors, notifications, background work, media, authentication, payments, accessibility interfaces, and any new OS capability central to the app. For each one, identify the specific API, the platforms and OS versions where it is available, and the proposed implementation path.

Then verify whether that path is built into the framework, provided by a maintained package, or requires custom platform integration. Account for who will implement and maintain it, and test it on the target platforms. A framework’s support for a general category does not establish that a particular API or app behavior is covered.
Flutter documents platform channels and custom Kotlin or Swift integration, but it does not aim to expose every native service as a common cross-platform API. Its official FAQ describes the interop and plugin system as designed to let developers access new mobile OS features and capabilities immediately; in practice, that access may require a plugin or custom native integration.
How platform-specific should the interface feel?
Decide whether users benefit more from a consistent custom design across platforms, or from interfaces that follow each platform’s controls and interaction conventions. This is a product decision: apps can share business logic without sharing every screen, and a unified visual system can still adapt layouts and behaviors to different devices.

- Identify interactions where platform conventions matter, such as navigation, menus, system dialogs, or text entry.
- Mark screens that need platform-specific controls, layouts, or behavior.
- Decide which parts of the UI can share a design system and which need tailored implementations.
- Test important flows on each platform; a screenshot or build on one target cannot establish that the other feels right.
Apple advises tailoring views and features to each platform. Flutter supports shared design systems, different layouts, native controls, and native interop, so choosing it does not require making every platform look or behave identically.
What performance does the app’s workload actually require?
Set measurable acceptance criteria for the flows that matter: launch time, frame pacing, scrolling, memory use, battery impact, rendering, and responsiveness under representative load. Build a realistic vertical slice and compare candidates on target devices, in release configurations, with comparable features and measurement boundaries.
Do not assume that native is always faster or that a cross-platform app will be just as fast for your workload. Flutter’s architecture uses its own rendering engine, and release apps compile to machine code for native targets; neither fact by itself establishes how a particular app will perform.

A 2026 preprint by Alexandru Ilovan compares native iOS, native Android, Flutter, React Native, and Kotlin Multiplatform implementations of one plant-management app. Its conclusion is that observed trade-offs vary with the quality attribute, workload, platform, and measurement boundary. It is evidence about that application and its measurements, not a definitive benchmark for every app category. The paper reports 2,000 samples for each available list-render and scroll-wrapper summary; that is the sample count for those measurements, not a general performance statistic.

Map existing skills and hiring plans to the languages, framework, native debugging, and integration work each candidate requires. Then estimate the work that continues after launch: dependency review, OS updates, platform testing, plugin maintenance, and ownership of custom integrations. Sharing code can reduce duplicated authored code, but code volume alone does not establish lower lifetime cost.
| Approach | Implementation model described in official documentation | Team and integration questions |
|---|---|---|
| Native iOS and Android | Separate platform implementations are an option when technologies or project settings do not overlap enough for a shared target; Apple recommends separate targets in that situation. | Can the team maintain platform-specific code and testing? Which APIs, UI conventions, and release responsibilities are important on each target? |
| Flutter | A cross-platform toolkit with its own rendering engine, platform channels, and custom Kotlin or Swift integration. | The app uses Dart. Which requirements can be met with the framework or a maintained plugin, and which need native integration? |
| React Native | Official documentation covers JavaScript fundamentals, native components, platform-specific code, testing, and performance. | The React Native introduction lists JavaScript fundamentals as a prerequisite. Can the team also handle platform-specific code and native debugging? |
| Kotlin Multiplatform | Allows code sharing while retaining native UI where desired. | Is sharing logic while keeping the UI native a better fit for the product and team than sharing more of the interface? |
React Native’s official documentation showed version 0.87 and an update date of August 12, 2026, when accessed on October 4, 2026. Check the documentation for the version you plan to use, since guidance and framework details can change.

Can accessibility and quality be tested on every target?
Turn accessibility into acceptance criteria, not a framework checkbox. Specify expected behavior for screen readers, large text, contrast, and alternative input, then verify actual screens and end-to-end flows on target platforms and devices. Include platform-specific UI behavior and device coverage in release testing.
Flutter documents support for screen readers, large text, contrast, and switch control. That describes framework capabilities; it does not prove that an app’s labels, focus order, layouts, or flows work for its users. Apple’s app design guidance likewise emphasizes designing for the platform. Test the implementation against the needs your product serves.
How do you compare candidates before choosing?
When multiple approaches appear viable, score each against the same requirements rather than comparing general claims about frameworks. Record evidence, assumptions, and unresolved risks so the team can see where a candidate depends on unverified API support or future maintenance.
- Define launch and support targets. List required platforms, OS versions, device types, and the flows users must complete.
- Inventory critical capabilities. Map each required OS feature to a verified API, package, or native integration for every target.
- Set interface expectations. Specify what should be shared and what must follow platform conventions.
- Agree on workload-specific quality thresholds. Define performance and accessibility criteria, then test a representative release-build vertical slice.
- Assess skills and ownership. Include training, recruitment, debugging, dependency review, OS updates, and maintenance of native integrations.
- Compare total project fit. Weigh platform coverage, reusable code, interface fidelity, measured resource use, team capability, and maintenance burden. Do not treat a shared-code percentage as a cost-saving percentage.
No universal cost-saving figure or broad market statistic establishes that one architecture is cheaper for every product. Development effort and maintenance are project-specific questions to answer with your requirements, team, and tested implementation options.
