Sensor-based vital-sign devices are not one interchangeable technology. A fingertip pulse oximeter estimates oxygen saturation and pulse rate; blood-pressure devices may use an inflatable cuff or a wearable cuffless method; other wearables and camera-based tools measure different signals. What a number means—and whether it is suitable for a particular decision—depends on the device, sensor site, intended use, person being measured, and how the device has been evaluated.

What counts as a sensor-based vital-sign solution?

These devices use sensors to capture a physical or optical signal and report an estimate or measurement such as oxygen saturation, pulse rate, blood pressure, heart rate, or respiratory rate. The label “wearable” describes a form factor, not a level of clinical performance. A device intended for casual wellness tracking is not automatically suitable for diagnosis, treatment decisions, or monitoring a particular medical condition.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maintains a list of selected authorized devices that incorporate sensor-based digital health technology. The agency says the list is not comprehensive; its entries include devices dating back to 2014. Not appearing on that list alone does not establish a device’s status, and appearing on it does not mean the device is appropriate for every person or purpose.

How the main approaches compare

Approach What it measures and how Site and reading pattern What to check
Fingertip pulse oximeter Estimates oxygen saturation and pulse rate using light. Usually placed on a fingertip; commonly used for a spot check. The FDA guidance describes the usual fingertip device, not every configuration or continuous-use claim. Intended population and setting, labeling, and factors that may affect accuracy.
Wearable sensor-based device Depends on the specific device and claimed parameter. Wear location and whether it provides continuous readings or spot checks depend on the device. FDA’s selected sDHT list covers qualifying non- or minimally invasive wearables for use outside clinical settings. Device-specific authorization, intended use, measurement method, and safety/effectiveness evidence.
Automated cuff blood-pressure device Measures blood pressure non-invasively with an automated cuff. Cuff site and use instructions depend on the device and its labeling; measurement is taken using a cuff rather than inferred from a cuffless wearable signal. Validation, cuff fit, measurement procedure, calibration, and maintenance.
Wearable cuffless blood-pressure device Estimates blood pressure without an inflatable cuff; performance depends on the particular device and method. Wear location, reading pattern, and requirements are device-specific; the FDA standards record does not establish one universal site or schedule. Validation for the claimed use and conditions, plus any calibration and repeat-measurement instructions.
Camera-based optical measurement An image sensor and software analyze reflected-light patterns to estimate pulse/heart rate and respiratory rate in the FDA classification description. Camera-based sensing can be contactless; the classification description does not establish a general reading cadence or working conditions for all products. Which parameters are claimed, intended use, and product-specific evaluation. A category description is not proof of authorization or accuracy for an individual solution.

What is a pulse oximeter, and how does it work?

A pulse oximeter, often called a pulse ox, is usually placed on a fingertip and uses light beams to estimate the oxygen saturation of the blood and pulse rate, without a blood draw. The FDA’s consumer guidance describes it as an estimate, not a direct blood measurement. A reading should therefore be understood in the context of the device’s instructions, the person using it, and how they feel.

What affects pulse oximeter accuracy?

The FDA identifies poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, tobacco use, and fingernail polish as factors that may affect accuracy. Follow the device instructions and do not treat an unexpected number as a diagnosis. If a reading concerns you, or symptoms are concerning, consider the symptoms and contact a health professional rather than relying only on the device display.

Can you rely only on a pulse oximeter?

No. The FDA advises against relying only on a pulse-oximeter reading; symptoms and clinical context matter. A reassuring number should not be used to dismiss symptoms, and a concerning number should be discussed with a health professional in context.

What matters when choosing or using a blood-pressure sensor?

Automated cuff devices

The World Health Organization’s 20 April 2020 technical specifications address automated, non-invasive blood-pressure devices that use a cuff. The publication covers device characteristics, regulatory requirements, standards, calibration, maintenance, procurement, and training. Its recommendations are specifically about cuff devices; they should not be extended to every wearable or cuffless product.

When assessing a cuff monitor, check whether it has been validated for the intended use and population, whether the cuff fits as directed, and whether the measurement procedure matches the instructions. Calibration and maintenance also matter. WHO notes that accurate measurement is essential to identifying and managing hypertension, which it describes as a condition with few symptoms.

Wearable cuffless devices

The FDA’s recognized-standards database describes IEEE 1708-2014 as a standard for objective performance evaluation of wearable cuffless blood-pressure devices. The existence of a standard does not show that every device complies with it, or that a particular device performs well for every person and setting. The FDA database record includes limitations and advises contacting the agency about using the standard to support certain claims, including patient transport, ambulatory monitoring, motion artifact, stress, or exercise testing.

For a cuffless device, look for evidence and instructions tied to the exact model and intended use. Check whether the manufacturer specifies calibration, repeat measurements, or conditions in which readings may be unsuitable. Do not assume a cuffless reading and a cuff reading are interchangeable simply because both display blood-pressure values.

How to judge a wearable or camera-based monitor

Start with the parameter and decision the device is intended to support, not its app, design, or “medical-grade” phrasing. FDA guidance for pulse-oximeter submissions says manufacturers seeking a specific clinical indication, such as disease screening or diagnosis, should provide clinical safety and effectiveness data for that indication. A device’s evaluation for one use does not automatically substantiate a different claim.

  • Confirm the exact parameter measured and the device’s stated intended use.
  • Check which people and settings the device is meant for, including whether the claimed use is spot-check or continuous monitoring.
  • Look for device-specific evaluation relevant to that use, rather than relying on a sensor category, standard title, or general claim about wearables.
  • Read the instructions for sensor placement, operating conditions, limitations, and what to do with an unexpected result.

For camera-based products in particular, the FDA classification record describes a category of hardware and software that estimates heart/pulse rate and respiratory rate from reflected-light patterns. That classification is a description of a device category; it is not evidence that every camera-based app or product is authorized, accurate, or appropriate for medical decisions.

Special caution: infant vital-sign monitors

In a safety communication issued September 16, 2025, the FDA warned consumers not to use unauthorized infant devices for monitoring vital signs. The agency says inaccurate measurements, failure to detect a change in condition, delayed treatment, or unnecessary intervention are possible risks. It also says infant monitors have not been evaluated to support monitoring for asthma, apnea, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), or an infant’s overall health condition.

The FDA states that no devices, including infant monitors, have been authorized to prevent SIDS or SUID. A monitor does not replace adult supervision or safe-sleep practices. To check whether an infant monitoring device has been evaluated and authorized by the FDA, verify the exact device and its intended use using FDA device information and the manufacturer’s labeling; do not infer authorization from an online listing, a sensor claim, or a general statement that a product is “FDA registered.”

Make the reading useful, not just available

For any sensor-based vital-sign device, match its validated purpose to the question you need answered. Recordings can be useful only within the device’s intended use and limits. If a result conflicts with how someone feels, or prompts concern, seek advice from a health professional rather than treating the sensor value as conclusive.
