In enterprise storage, a business copy volume is a point-in-time copy of a disk or storage-array volume. The term is associated with BCV, usually expanded in technical glossaries as “business continuance volume.” It does not refer to a verified measure of how much copywriting a business produces.
What is a business copy volume (BCV)?
A business copy volume is a copy of a storage volume that represents its contents at a particular point in time. A technical glossary defines a business continuance volume (BCV) as this kind of copy and lists “business copy volume” and “split mirror” as alternate names. The terminology is associated with enterprise storage and replication.
“Business copy volume” can sound like a measure of written business content, but the sources for this term establish a storage meaning—not a word count, page count, or content-production metric.
How HPE XP8 Business Copy works
HPE XP8 Business Copy is one vendor-specific implementation. HPE documentation describes pairs consisting of a primary volume (P-VOL) and a secondary volume (S-VOL). Its management tools support operations such as creating, splitting, resynchronizing, and monitoring those pairs.

The guide describes managing pairs through Remote Web Console or RAID Manager. In its specific high-availability example, HPE instructs users to stop I/O for the target backup volume before splitting the Business Copy pair to obtain a backup. That instruction applies to the documented HPE XP8 scenario; it is not a universal procedure for other storage systems.
Is a BCV enough for disaster recovery?
No. A point-in-time copy can be useful in a disaster-recovery or backup workflow, but the BCV label alone does not establish that a copy is recoverable, independent, or protected from the same failure as the original. Suitability depends on the storage configuration and the procedures used to create, preserve, and restore the copy. HPE’s operational guidance also shows that obtaining a usable copy can involve conditions specific to the system and workload.
