Yes. IAR announced support for Tongxin Microelectronics (TMC) THA6 Gen2 automotive MCUs in IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm 9.60.3 on 22 January 2025. The release notes specifically list the THA6206, with hardware-debug and flash-loader support; they do not show example projects, flash breakpoints, or C-Trust support for that device.

Which THA6 Gen2 device is listed?

IAR’s release notes for Embedded Workbench for Arm 9.60.3 identify THA6206 in the TMC THA6 family. The entry is specific to that chip and release; it should not be read as confirmation that every THA6 Gen2 model is supported, or that later toolchain releases retain the same feature coverage.

The support table marks the following for THA6206:

Capability in IAR’s 9.60.3 device-support table THA6206 entry
Hardware debug Yes
Flash loader Yes
Header/DDF No
Example projects No
Flash breakpoints No
C-Trust No

These entries describe the support recorded in that release’s table. Before selecting a current toolchain for a project, check the device-support notes for the exact IAR version and MCU model you plan to use.

What does IAR say the THA6 Gen2 series includes?

In its 22 January 2025 announcement, IAR describes THA6 Gen2 as a 400 MHz Arm Cortex-R52+ MCU series based on Armv8. IAR also says the series integrates GTM 4.1, supports high-resolution PWM, complies with EVITA-Full, and includes hardware resolver-to-digital conversion alongside software decoding.

STM32 Nucleo Development Board with STM32F446RE MCU NUCLEO-F446RE
  • High-performance foundation line, ARM Cortex-M4 core with DSP and FPU, 512 Kbytes Flash, 180 MHz CPU, ART Accelerator, Dual QSPI
  • On-board ST-LINK/V2-1 debugger/programmer with SWD connector
  • Can be powered from USB
  • Three LEDs, Two Push-buttons
  • Support of wide choice of Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) including IAR, ARM Keil, GCC-based IDEs

IAR links resolver conversion to motor-position sensing and names powertrain, chassis, body systems, and intelligent-driving applications as intended uses. These are specifications and positioning from IAR’s announcement; the cited material does not independently verify them against a TMC datasheet or certification record.

What does the ASIL D statement mean?

IAR says its Embedded Workbench for Arm Functional Safety Edition is TÜV SÜD-certified and supports ISO 26262 ASIL D compliance. The announcement presents this as a toolchain capability, alongside code generation, integrated debugging, C-STAT static analysis, and C-RUN runtime analysis. It does not establish that an MCU, ECU, or application built with the tools is automatically ASIL D certified; that outcome depends on the complete development and safety-assurance process.

  • Can be powered from USB
  • Three LEDs, Two Push-buttons
  • Support of wide choice of Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) including IAR, ARM Keil, GCC-based IDEs

IAR also described THA6 Gen2 as “the first Arm Cortex-R52+ ASIL D MCU in China.” That is the company’s characterization in its dated announcement, not an independently substantiated comparison in the cited material.

What should developers verify before adopting it?

  • Confirm that the target is THA6206 and consult the support table for the exact Embedded Workbench release you intend to use.
  • Plan around the features actually listed for 9.60.3: hardware debug and a flash loader are marked available, while example projects and flash breakpoints are not.
  • Obtain authoritative silicon documentation and any required safety evidence from TMC or other appropriate sources; the IAR announcement alone does not independently substantiate the MCU specifications or certification claims.
  • Confirm current availability, package options, evaluation hardware, debugger compatibility, and licensing with the relevant vendors. The cited IAR material does not state these details.
