Yes—you can edit documents and use AI during a flight without Wi-Fi, but you need to prepare both in advance. Make the files available offline, download a local AI model and runtime, and test the complete workflow while disconnected before you travel. A cloud-based assistant is not the same as offline AI: it may stop working when the connection does.
What you need to make offline document work possible
There are two separate pieces to prepare: the document and the AI. Installing an app does not automatically make its cloud files available offline, and an AI feature is not necessarily running on your device. Before departure, confirm that you can open and save the documents without a network, and that any assistant you plan to use is configured for local inference.
- Offline-ready document: a local file or a cloud document explicitly made available offline.
- Local AI: a model downloaded to your device and run by local inference software.
- Time to test: a disconnected rehearsal that checks opening, prompting, saving, and reopening your work.
Prepare documents before you leave
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on a computer
Google’s offline access instructions require an internet connection to set up offline access, a supported browser (Chrome or Edge), the Google Docs Offline extension, and enough local storage. Turn on Drive offline access while online, then mark the specific files you need as available offline. Open each important file and check its document status; Google says the status explains when a file is not ready for offline use.
Microsoft Office mobile apps
For Microsoft’s mobile Office apps, Microsoft advises downloading and opening documents before going offline. A cloud-stored file must have been opened online at least once. Offline edits can be saved locally, and OneDrive changes sync after you reconnect. For shared files in SharePoint, Microsoft says synchronization happens once online while the Word app is running.

Keep a fallback copy for important work
For work you cannot afford to lose, save a separate local working copy if your app and workflow allow it. Before travel, disconnect from the network, open that copy, make a small edit, save it, then quit and reopen it. Know which copy is authoritative and where pending changes are stored. This is a practical safeguard, not a vendor guarantee that every app or file type will behave identically.
Set up local AI before the flight
Download the runtime and model while online
Ollama’s quickstart explains how to install the runtime, download a model, and run it locally. Its documented Gemma 4 E2B example is about 7.2 GB to download. That figure applies to that example model, not to local AI models generally.

Ollama recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or unified memory for the Gemma 4 E2B example, and says larger context windows need more memory. Treat this as model-specific planning guidance, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of acceptable speed on a particular device. The required storage and memory depend on the model and the task.
Check that the AI path is actually local
Ollama’s local API documentation describes a local server that does not require an API key. That is different from sending a prompt to a hosted AI service. If privacy or reliable use without connectivity matters, verify that the document app or assistant is pointed at the local endpoint and the model is on your device.

Ollama says its cloud features can be disabled for local-only use; doing so also removes access to cloud models and web search. Its FAQ describes that trade-off. A locally running model can work without a network, but it cannot retrieve current information while disconnected unless the relevant material is already available to it.
Run a disconnected rehearsal
Do this before you depend on the setup in the air. A successful prompt in a connected state does not prove the app will keep using a local model offline.

- While online, finish making the required documents available offline and download the local model.
- Turn off Wi-Fi or otherwise disconnect the device from the network.
- Open the actual document you plan to work on and confirm it is readable and editable.
- Ask the local model for a representative task, such as outlining a section or rewriting selected text.
- Save the document, quit the document and AI apps, reopen them, and confirm the changes remain.
If a file reports that it is unavailable, use the app’s status or offline-access controls while connected and repeat the test. If an AI prompt fails, check whether the model finished downloading and whether the app uses a hosted service instead of the local endpoint.

Use the offline-ready or local copy you tested. Local AI is best suited to bounded work based on material already on your device: outlining, revising selected passages, summarizing a local document, or suggesting edits. Verify generated facts, numbers, citations, and edits against the source before relying on them.

Do not assume a feature works offline just because it is called AI. OpenAI describes ChatGPT for Word as a sidebar for drafting, revising, summarizing, and formatting, but its product page does not establish that those features run offline. In contrast, Google’s Android AICore help page says supported AI features can run on-device, including in airplane mode. That does not mean every Android device or document app has a general-purpose offline document assistant.
Follow your airline’s current instructions for device use. Rules can vary by carrier, jurisdiction, and phase of flight; the software guidance here does not establish a universal airline rule.
Reconnect and check your work after landing
After you are online again, allow pending edits to sync and confirm which copy is authoritative. For shared documents, check the current sync status and review changes from collaborators before continuing. Microsoft documents later sync for its mobile apps; Google’s offline-access guidance explains preparation and availability but does not establish the outcome of every possible edit conflict.
