The original full-size Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro is a wired mechanical keyboard built around an unusually rich control surface: a Command Dial, eight dedicated macro keys, a media roller and buttons, and lighting that extends to its magnetic wrist rest. That makes it a compelling desk keyboard for someone who will use those features, but a poor match for anyone seeking a compact or wireless board. Its value comes down to whether the extra controls and RGB are worth the space, wired-only setup, and Synapse dependence for some customization.

What the BlackWidow V4 Pro adds

This review covers the original full-size wired model, RZ03-0468x, announced in February 2023. It is not the later BlackWidow V4 Pro 75%, which is a different keyboard.

The Pro’s defining feature is the amount of control it puts within reach. It has a Command Dial, five macro keys down the left side, three more macro buttons on the left side edge, a media roller, and four media buttons. That is a meaningful hardware difference from a conventional full-size board: macros and media actions have dedicated controls rather than relying solely on key combinations.

Razer describes the dial as having eight default modes and says Synapse customization can provide up to 100 custom modes. Razer’s launch announcement positioned the feature as a way to give users “even more control”; that is the manufacturer’s pitch, while the practical benefit depends on whether you assign actions you use often.

Specifications at a glance

Specification What is established
Layout and connection Full-size; wired, with detachable Type-C connection (Razer Support, updated 2026).
Switch options Green, described by Razer as clicky and tactile; Yellow, described by Razer as linear and smooth.
Polling rate Up to 8,000 Hz, the manufacturer’s maximum specification; that maximum does not mean every use case benefits equally.
Lighting Per-key RGB plus 38-zone underglow, including lighting on the magnetic wrist rest (Razer, 2023).
Onboard profiles Up to five (Razer, 2023 and current support material).
Dimensions 466 × 152.5 × 43.9 mm (Razer Support, updated 2026).
Weight Razer Support lists approximately 1,639 g; an undated Razer manual lists 1,128.5 g without the wrist rest and 1,530 g with it. The published figures conflict.
Switch lifespan Razer Support lists 80 million keystrokes (2026); Razer’s 2023 launch announcement said up to 100 million.
Launch MSRP $229.99 USD / €269.99, announced by Razer in 2023; this is not a current street price.

Typing feel and build

Razer sells the keyboard with Green clicky/tactile switches or Yellow linear/smooth switches. Those descriptions are Razer’s characterizations, not results from an independent side-by-side switch test. Choose Green if you specifically want audible clicks and tactile feedback; choose Yellow if you prefer a smoother linear action. The published specifications do not establish a measured noise level or a comparative typing-performance result.

Razer’s launch specifications describe a 5052 aluminum alloy top case, doubleshot ABS keycaps, internal case and PCB foam, lubricated stabilizers, and two-level kickstands. RTINGS independently describes the board as well-built and notes its adjustable incline, shine-through keycaps, and detachable wrist rest. These details support a feature-rich, substantial desk setup, but they do not establish long-term reliability or a quantified defect rate.

There is a specification discrepancy worth knowing if weight or longevity will affect your purchase. Current Razer Support gives an approximate weight of 1,639 g, whereas the undated manual separates 1,128.5 g without the wrist rest from 1,530 g with it. For switches, current support lists 80 million keystrokes, while the launch announcement said up to 100 million. Treat the current support figure as the newer manufacturer specification; neither published lifespan rating is an independent durability test.

Command Dial, macros, and Synapse

The dial and macro buttons are most useful when you assign them actions that would otherwise take a menu or key combination. Razer says the dial’s eight default modes can work without Synapse active. Custom Mode is different: it requires Synapse, and Razer says it can map clockwise and counter-clockwise actions and support up to 100 custom modes.

On-the-fly macro recording also requires Synapse to be installed and running. That distinction matters if you want a keyboard whose extra controls remain fully configurable without desktop software: the default dial modes are available without Synapse active, but custom dial behavior and on-the-fly recording are not software-independent features.

Lighting, wrist rest, and desk setup

The magnetic wrist rest is included and adds RGB underglow; Razer says it does not need a separate USB connection for that lighting. The keyboard also has per-key RGB and 38-zone underglow. Together, they make the board suited to a desk where lighting is part of the setup, while the attached rest increases the amount of space the keyboard occupies.

Razer lists a USB 2.0 passthrough. The manual warns that it is not compatible with devices requiring higher voltage or USB 3.0, citing external hard drives as an example, so it should not be treated as a general-purpose high-power or USB 3.0 port.

Footprint and everyday fit

This is a full-size board with substantial controls on the left, plus a wrist rest. Even without the rest, it remains large. RTINGS considers it a good keyboard for programming, but says its size and wired-only design make it sub-par for entertainment or home-theater use. That distinction is useful: the Pro is designed to live at a desk, not move between a desk and couch or disappear into a compact setup.

Model Relevant distinction
BlackWidow V4 Pro Command Dial, three side macro buttons, wrist-rest RGB zones, media roller, and up to 8,000 Hz polling.
Standard BlackWidow V4 RTINGS says it adds a macro key in place of the Pro’s Command Dial, but lacks the Pro’s three side macro buttons and wrist-rest RGB zones.
Huntsman V2 RTINGS describes it as having higher-quality PBT keycaps; the BlackWidow V4 Pro instead emphasizes dedicated macros, the media roller, and up to 8,000 Hz polling.

The stock caps are ABS. Razer’s support page confirms that its PBT Keycap Upgrade Set is compatible, but says the set does not include keycaps for the dedicated macro keys. Confirm that a currently available kit matches your layout before buying it.

Price and buying advice

Razer announced the original keyboard at a launch MSRP of $229.99 USD or €269.99 in 2023. That historical MSRP does not establish today’s price or availability. Check the live listing for your region, the switch variant, and the layout before purchasing.

Consider the Pro if you expect to use its dedicated macro controls, dial, media hardware, and lighting as part of one permanent desk setup. If those features would mostly go unused, the keyboard’s size and wired-only design are difficult trade-offs to justify on their own. Its headline polling rate is a maximum manufacturer specification, not a reason by itself to choose it.
