An LTE Cat-M1 module gives an IoT device a cellular radio for connecting to compatible LTE-M networks—but it does not guarantee worldwide service or include a cellular subscription. To work in a particular country, the module’s exact variant must support the operator’s LTE-M bands, the operator must accept the device, and connectivity must be provisioned.

What an LTE Cat-M1 module does

LTE Cat-M1, also called LTE-M, is a cellular network technology used by compatible IoT devices. A Cat-M1 module supplies the device’s radio hardware; it is not itself a network, coverage guarantee, or service plan. Cat-M1 also should not be treated as interchangeable with every ordinary LTE service: the operator must have a compatible LTE-M network and permit the device to connect.

Quectel describes its BG95 family as a series of multimode LPWA modules supporting LTE Cat-M1, Cat-NB2, and EGPRS, with integrated GNSS. Quectel’s BG95 product page describes the family; capabilities and bands still depend on the specific model.

Does a Cat-M1 module work worldwide?

Not automatically. “Global” can describe a manufacturer’s product classification or a particular carrier listing, but it does not mean the module will register on every operator in every country. Compatibility depends on several separate checks:

Botletics SIM7000 LTE CAT-M1 NB-IoT Cellular + GPS + Antenna Shield Kit for Arduino (SIM7000G)
  • Operates on LTE CAT-M1 and/or NB-IoT technology + GPS
  • Directly compatible with Arduino Uno, Mega, and Leonardo + easy connection for other logic voltages
  • Ultra low-power mode drawing < 8uA, ideal for battery-powered IoT devices + LiPo battery charging
  • Kit includes dual flexible LTE/GPS antenna and stacking female header kit
  • Detailed documentation, wiki, Arduino library, and code examples on Github + community forum to ask questions
  • Exact module variant: Confirm the complete model and suffix, then check its Cat-M1 frequency bands. Do not assume that specifications for one BG95 variant apply to the whole family.
  • Network availability: The operator in each deployment location must offer LTE-M service and have coverage where the device will be used.
  • Device approval: The operator may require the module, finished device, or antenna design to meet its approval requirements.
  • Connectivity provisioning: A SIM or eSIM and an appropriate service arrangement are needed. Confirm whether roaming is supported and review its commercial terms.

For example, Verizon Open Development identifies BG95-M1 as supporting Cat-M1 bands 4 and 13 and labels that listing “LTE Global / Roaming.” That information applies to the BG95-M1 entry in Verizon Open Development; it is not proof of universal compatibility for other BG95 variants or all operators.

Quectel’s 2026 LPWA module brochure lists BG95 family band configurations and named certifications or operators. Treat these as manufacturer-reported details for the identified model, not as a guarantee of service or coverage in every location.

What to check before deploying internationally

  1. Identify the exact SKU. Record the module’s full model name and suffix from the label or supplier documentation.
  2. Match its bands to the destination network. Check the Cat-M1 bands listed for that SKU against those used by the target operator. A general family page or “global” label is not enough.
  3. Verify LTE-M coverage and operator acceptance. Confirm that the operator offers LTE-M at the deployment locations and that it will accept the module and finished device.
  4. Confirm service provisioning. Check SIM or eSIM availability, activation, roaming support, coverage conditions, and recurring service terms with the connectivity provider.
  5. Validate the assembled device. Check that the antenna and host design are appropriate for the supported bands and satisfy the relevant approval requirements.

There is no exhaustive current country-and-operator compatibility matrix established here. For a deployment spanning multiple countries, verify each target network with the operator or connectivity provider rather than inferring coverage from a module’s product label.

BG95 examples: variants, form factors, and published specifications

The Quectel BG95 family is one example of a multimode Cat-M1 module line, not a single interchangeable SKU. Quectel’s developer catalog describes BG95-M1 as a global model, which is a manufacturer product-region classification rather than evidence that it works with every operator worldwide. Quectel also lists a BG95-M3 Mini PCIe product. Compare the exact model and implementation before choosing a part.

Item What the source states How to interpret it
BG95 LGA family 23.6 × 19.9 × 2.2 mm; extended operating temperature of −40 °C to +85 °C; maximum Cat-M1 data rates of 588 kbps downlink and 1119 kbps uplink, according to Quectel’s product specification. These are manufacturer specifications for the BG95 product family, not independently measured field results. Check the exact variant’s documentation before designing around a figure.
BG95-M3 Mini PCIe Quectel lists it as a Mini PCIe product; the cited catalog listing does not establish a universal set of bands or operators for every deployment. Confirm the product’s exact specifications, host compatibility, antenna arrangement, and target-network support.
BG95-M1 Quectel’s developer catalog labels it a global model. Verizon Open Development lists Cat-M1 bands 4 and 13 for its BG95-M1 entry. The catalog label and carrier listing have different scopes. Neither guarantees registration on all networks; verify the target operator and service arrangement.

Quectel lists the BG95 family in an LGA package, while the BG95-M3 Mini PCIe product uses a different form factor. An LGA module is integrated directly into a host board; a Mini PCIe implementation uses a different board and connection arrangement. In either case, confirm the host design, RF path, antenna frequency support, and what the selected product includes. No particular antenna or development board is established as universally compatible.

Choosing a module for an IoT project

Start with the deployment requirements, not the “global” label. Compare candidate modules using the following criteria:

  • Regional band support: Does the precise SKU support the Cat-M1 bands used in every target market?
  • Operator compatibility: Is LTE-M available at the device locations, and is the finished hardware accepted by the operator?
  • Integration: Does the project suit a solder-down LGA module or a Mini PCIe product? Account for the host board, interfaces, and antenna design.
  • Application needs: Use published maximum rates and other vendor specifications as planning inputs, then validate performance for the actual deployment and workload.
  • Connectivity operations: Confirm SIM or eSIM provisioning, roaming, coverage, and recurring service terms separately from hardware selection.

For product searches, “Quectel BG95-M3 Mini PCIe LTE Cat-M1 module” identifies a relevant product category, and BG95-M1 is another model reference. Verify the exact SKU and regional suitability with the manufacturer or supplier. The cited manufacturer sources do not establish live retail stock, current pricing, or the contents of a particular listing.
