It released Specification 1.0 in June 2025; UEC’s specification history lists version 1.0.3, dated July 16, 2026, as its latest published version. The effort spans transport and congestion behavior through Ethernet links, physical-layer technologies, software, and related management and compliance work.
What is the Ultra Ethernet Consortium?
UEC is an industry consortium working to adapt Ethernet networking for large-scale AI and HPC workloads. It describes its mission as delivering an open, interoperable, high-performance Ethernet communications stack. Its stated target markets are HPC at scale, AI scale-out networking for GPUs, and cloud AI and HPC. The consortium was announced on July 19, 2023, as a project of the Joint Development Foundation hosted by the Linux Foundation. Its founding announcement named AMD, Arista, Broadcom, Cisco, Eviden (an Atos business), HPE, Intel, Meta, and Microsoft; that is the founding announcement’s list, not a complete current membership roster.
UEC says it intends to engage with relevant standards-development organizations so its technology can join the broadly deployed family of Ethernet-based technologies. That is an expressed goal: publication of a UEC specification does not by itself mean an external standards body has formally adopted it. UEC’s mission and target markets describe the consortium’s stated scope.
What does UEC mean by a full stack?
UEC’s scope extends across the communications path rather than focusing on one component. Its 2025 Specification 1.0 announcement described work involving applications, transport protocols, congestion control, direct memory access (DMA), Ethernet link and physical-layer (PHY) technologies, and network security. The release also named network interface cards (NICs), switches, optics, and cables as parts of the wider ecosystem.

A 2025 white paper sponsored by UEC and crediting Intersect360 Research explains Ultra Ethernet Transport (UET) as a new transport protocol that supports remote direct memory access (RDMA). RDMA allows data to move between network and application memory without software copying each transfer. The paper also frames UEC as a cross-layer effort that includes software, storage, compliance, management, and performance and debugging work. Its technical and market explanations should be read with its UEC sponsorship in mind.
Which UEC specification is current?
UEC’s specification-history page lists version 1.0.3, dated July 16, 2026, as the latest published specification. UEC recommends using the latest published version as the current implementation reference unless an earlier version is needed for historical or comparison purposes. The page records this release sequence:
| Version | Publication date |
|---|---|
| 1.0 | June 11, 2025 |
| 1.0.1 | September 5, 2025 |
| 1.0.2 | January 28, 2026 |
| 1.0.3 | July 16, 2026 |
UEC first announced the public release of Specification 1.0 on June 11, 2025. Its release described the specification as a stack covering multiple networking layers. Hugh Holbrook, chair of UEC’s Technical Advisory Committee, said it “incorporates a wealth of knowledge, experience, and ideas related to applications, transport protocols, congestion control, direct memory access, Ethernet link and PHY technologies, and network security.” Check the UEC specification history for later version changes.

What work has UEC described beyond Specification 1.0?
In an October 9, 2025 article, UEC described development work on several areas beyond its initial release. These are consortium-reported areas of work, not a guarantee that every item is in the latest specification or available in deployed products.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Congestion management: programmable congestion management and congestion signaling.
- Small-message performance: improvements aimed at reducing the cost of small transfers.
- Scale-up transport: a transport focused on scale-up networking.
- In-network collectives: work on performing collective operations within the network.
UEC said a basic UET packet has 104 bytes of headers. The consortium characterized that as 2.5% overhead for a 4,096-byte packet and noted that the relative cost is greater for smaller transfers, such as 256 bytes; it did not give a percentage for the 256-byte example. UEC said it was pursuing a reduced forwarding header intended to halve that overhead in optimized deployments. These are UEC’s design descriptions and targets, not independent performance-test results.

The same October 2025 article reported work with SNIA and NVM Express on storage performance, and coordination with the Open Compute Project on Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI) and Redfish configuration models. Those are collaborations UEC reported at the time; the article alone does not establish that every effort has since shipped.
How does UEC relate to Ethernet standards?
UEC is developing specifications within an Ethernet-based ecosystem, but it is not accurate to treat each consortium specification as automatically equivalent to a formal standard published or adopted by an external standards body. UEC’s stated plan is to engage with relevant standards organizations and contribute to wider Ethernet-based technologies. For implementers, the distinction matters: check the applicable UEC specification version and the status of any external standards work separately.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
UEC was announced in 2023 with the aim of improving efficiency and performance across the stack. Dr. J Metz, then chair of UEC, described the approach as examining “every layer – from the physical all the way through the software layers” to improve performance at scale. Those are the consortium’s goals, rather than independent proof of realized gains.

What should infrastructure teams evaluate?
UEC’s scope makes workload and operational fit more useful evaluation criteria than a simple label such as “Ethernet versus another fabric.” The sources described here do not establish an independent performance comparison between UEC deployments and InfiniBand or other fabrics, so they do not support naming a performance winner.
