The company positioned it for IoT endpoints such as solar-inverter gateways and home security systems. Renesas’s product page currently lists RZ/Five as active, with product longevity through 2033; that status does not establish stock or guarantee supply.
What Renesas announced
The RZ/Five is a general-purpose microprocessor unit (MPU) that uses Andes’s 64-bit AX45MP RISC-V CPU core. Renesas framed it as an additional choice in its RZ family, not a replacement for its Arm-based MPUs. In the March 1, 2022 announcement, Senior Vice President Hiroto Nitta described the launch as an expansion of Renesas’s RISC-V offering; statements in the release about market leadership and expected adoption are company views, not independent assessments.
Renesas named solar inverter gateways and home security systems as examples of IoT endpoints for the RZ/Five. Its announcement described a compact package for less complex designs and highlighted support for external DDR memory with error checking and correction (ECC), as well as security functions. These descriptions indicate the product’s intended design space; they do not establish a performance ranking against other processors.
RZ/Five specifications and interfaces
The following figures are specifications in Renesas’s March 1, 2022 announcement. They are not independent benchmark results.

Renesas’s current RZ/Five product page labels the product “Active” and lists product longevity through 2033, as observed on October 4, 2026. The longevity field is not a statement of current inventory or a supply contract.
How RZ/Five differs from RZ/G2UL
Renesas described the RZ/Five as compatible with the Arm-based RZ/G2UL in package and peripheral functions. That can make the pair relevant when a design team wants to evaluate RISC-V and Arm-based CPU options within a related hardware context. The announcement does not establish pin-for-pin interchangeability, nor does it provide a complete board-level or price comparison.

| Comparison point | RZ/Five | RZ/G2UL |
|---|---|---|
| CPU family | Andes AX45MP, 64-bit RISC-V | Arm-based |
| Package and peripheral relationship | Renesas says package and peripheral functions are compatible with RZ/G2UL | Reference point for the compatibility described in the 2022 announcement |
| Intended design complexity | Renesas describes RZ/Five as compact and aimed at less complex designs | A comparable complexity description is not stated in the announcement |
| Maximum frequency | 1 GHz, per the 2022 announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement |
For evaluation, Renesas described an RZ SMARC Evaluation Board Kit that supports evaluation and switching between RZ/Five and RZ/G2UL CPU modules. The release does not give enough detail to infer that existing boards, firmware, or software will work unchanged across the two options; teams should confirm module, board, and software requirements for their specific design.
Software and system-level support
The March 2022 release described a Verified Linux Package featuring Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) Linux with long-term maintenance support for more than 10 years. That duration is attributed to the release and should not be read as a stated end date for a particular software branch.
