Use a video converter for a quick trimmed clip, an image-sequence workflow for hand-built animation, or GIPHY when you want editing and sharing together. Keep the animation short, resize it, and preview it at the size people will see it.
Choose a GIF-making workflow
| Your source or goal | Good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A video clip | Ezgif or GIPHY | Trim to the moment you want, then convert; GIPHY also offers captions and stickers. |
| A screen recording | Ezgif | Convert the saved recording like any other video, then resize and optimize it. |
| Drawings or separate images | Ezgif or Photoshop | Arrange frames, set timing, and choose how the animation loops. |
| A still image or sprite sheet | Ezgif | Apply motion to a still, or split a sprite sheet into frames. |
| A phone recording or camera-roll media | GIPHY mobile | Record or select media, edit it, and upload from the app. |
Turn a video clip into a GIF
For a reaction, short scene, or other existing clip, trimming before conversion is the key step: the shorter the animation, the less image data the GIF needs to hold. Ezgif accepts a video upload or link, and lets you choose the start and end points, output width, and frame rate before conversion. Its guide suggests 10–15 frames per second and/or a width of 480 pixels as practical starting points for smaller files, not as universal platform rules. You can then use its optimization tools if the result is still too large. See Ezgif’s video-to-GIF guide.
GIPHY’s desktop maker can create, edit, and caption GIFs from video files and supported media URLs. Its stated input limit is under 100 MB and under 15 seconds, and desktop creation requires sign-in. Those are GIPHY conditions, not general GIF limits. Follow GIPHY’s desktop creation instructions.
Convert a screen recording
Record the demonstration with your device’s screen recorder, save it as a video, then trim and convert it using the video workflow above. This is useful for showing a short interface interaction, a reproducible bug, or a software tip. Screen recordings often have large dimensions and broad areas that barely change; resize the output and try optimization to control its file size. Ezgif’s guide also documents recorder options for Windows, macOS, and Linux: How to make a GIF with Ezgif.

- See it all, tweak it live. A crystal-clear OLED screen serves you with real-time parameter feedback. Instant and intuitive control, putting creativity first. Built-in arpeggiator makes it easy to change rhythm, beat, pattern and octave.
- Not only USB-MIDI capability, BT5.0 can coveniently build wireless connection to the DAWs on iOS devices, no driver, no wire nor adapter required anymore, say goodbye to cable mess.
- Optionally powered by USB or by 3 AA batteries(not included). Its small size and light weight makes it highly portable, it will literally fit into any backpack. Whether on a train, on a plane, or in the garden – the EMK-25 can be used anywhere, even in the most cramped spaces.
- Combination with Cubase LE15 & Cubasis LE3 software package makes this midi controller the perfect entry-level choice for use in productions and at live gigs.
Build an animation from images or drawings
Use an image sequence
Gather the frames, put them in the order they should play, and set each frame’s delay before generating the GIF. Matching the images’ dimensions and aspect ratio helps prevent distracting jumps. Ezgif supports uploading and ordering images for frame-by-frame animation, stop motion, or a slideshow. Its guide uses a delay of 10 centiseconds (0.1 seconds) as an example, which is about 10 frames per second; choose timing that suits the motion rather than treating that example as a required setting.
Use Photoshop layers and a timeline
- Create variations of your drawing and save them as separate files.
- Place the images on layers in Photoshop, then choose Timeline > Create Frame Animation and Make Frames From Layers.
- Set the frame delay and looping behavior, then preview the animation.
- Export the GIF with Save for Web (Legacy).
Adobe’s tutorial uses a 0.1-second frame delay and a loop setting of Forever as its example; those settings can be changed to fit the animation. Photoshop’s layer-and-timeline approach is most useful if you already use the desktop editor or want detailed control. See Adobe’s Photoshop GIF tutorial.

Animate a still image or sprite sheet
A still image can be given motion with an effect such as zooming, rotating, or scrolling. In Ezgif, more frames can make that movement appear smoother, but also increase the file size. For a sprite sheet, split the sheet into tiles, remove frames you do not want, set the frame timing, and export. Ezgif describes both options in its GIF creation guide.
Make a GIF on a phone
GIPHY’s mobile creation flow lets you record a GIF or sticker, or choose media from the camera roll. You can add text, filters, or stickers, trim and crop the result, and select a loop mode. GIPHY lists Normal, reverse, and ping-pong modes for iOS. Its mobile instructions cover the workflow: How to Create on Mobile.

Before uploading, decide whether the GIF should be public or private. GIPHY says private uploads cannot be shared, so that setting will not work for a GIF you intend to send to other people. Use material you have permission to publish; GIPHY’s desktop flow also provides a source URL field for crediting original material. See GIPHY’s desktop instructions.
Keep the GIF small enough to share
GIF stores image frames and can become large quickly, especially when the clip is long, high-resolution, or has a high frame rate. Trim first, then reduce width or frame rate and optimize the result. Preview it at its expected display size: a GIF can look fine when enlarged in an editor but lose useful detail when viewed small.

If uploading to GIPHY, its best-practices page recommends keeping uploads to six seconds or less, 8 MB or less, using 480p source resolution, and staying below 100 frames when possible. These are GIPHY recommendations, not universal limits; check the destination’s current rules before exporting. GIPHY’s GIF creation best practices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know what GIF can and cannot do
GIF supports up to 256 colors per frame, binary transparency (a pixel is transparent or opaque), and no audio. It can be a convenient choice when broad compatibility matters, but it is often less efficient than video or newer animated formats. If your destination accepts them, APNG, WebP, or AVIF may offer more colors or transparency options, or a smaller file. Use GIF when the destination or audience needs GIF compatibility.
