The “The network security key isn’t correct” message does not identify the cause by itself: the Wi-Fi password may be wrong or have changed, or this Windows 11 PC may have a saved-network, adapter, or compatibility problem. Confirm the network and current key first, then use a few connection checks to decide whether to troubleshoot Windows or ask the router administrator.

1. Confirm the network name and current Wi-Fi key

Check that you selected the exact Wi-Fi network you intend to join, then confirm its current password with the person who manages the router. A key remembered from an earlier setup may no longer be current. Re-enter the confirmed key carefully rather than relying on a saved password.

If possible, try that same network and key on another device. If it connects, that helps narrow the problem to this PC or to a difference in how it connects, but it does not prove Windows is at fault. One Microsoft Q&A user reported that another device was connected while the Windows PC showed this error; that single report is not a controlled diagnosis. Microsoft Q&A

2. Use connection checks to identify which side to investigate

Before changing settings, note what works. These checks help direct the next step; the community reports below do not quantify how reliably any one pattern predicts a cause.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Other devices also fail on this network: ask the router owner or administrator to confirm the active key and check the router configuration.
  • Only this PC fails: try connecting the PC to another known-good Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot, if available. If it can connect elsewhere, concentrate on the saved connection or the interaction between this adapter and the affected router.
  • One Wi-Fi band works but another does not: tell the router administrator which band fails. A user report described a key working on 2.4 GHz but not 5 GHz; this is a useful distinction to test, not proof that either band is defective. Ten Forums discussion
  • The issue began after a change: note whether a Windows or wireless-driver update, router change, or password change happened around the same time.

3. Forget the saved network and reconnect

If this PC alone has trouble, remove its saved connection so Windows asks for the key again. The current Windows 11 path is:

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
  2. Select the affected network and choose Forget.
  3. Return to the Wi-Fi network list, select that network, and enter the key you just confirmed with the router owner.

Forgetting the network clears the saved connection on this PC; it does not change the router’s password. Microsoft Q&A replies suggest forgetting and reconnecting as a step for this error, but they do not establish a universal success rate. If labels differ on your Windows installation, use the closest current Wi-Fi and saved-network settings. Microsoft Q&A

  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

4. Check the wireless adapter driver if the evidence points to this PC

If the PC still cannot join after reconnecting, check for an appropriate wireless driver through Windows Update or the computer or adapter manufacturer’s support page. Use a driver intended for your exact PC or adapter model. Avoid third-party driver-download sites.

If the failure started immediately after a driver update, check whether the manufacturer supports rolling back to an earlier driver for your model. A Microsoft Q&A reply suggests updating or selecting an older driver, but it does not identify a tested version that applies to every PC. Microsoft Q&A

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

5. Have the router administrator check security settings

If multiple devices fail, or only one band is affected, ask the router owner or network administrator to inspect the configuration rather than changing router security settings on your own. Router menus and supported options vary, so follow the manufacturer’s current instructions and keep wireless security enabled.

In one Microsoft Q&A reply, a Community Support Specialist suggested “one possible setting” to try: changing the wireless security configuration from Mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK to WPA2-PSK. This is an individual community suggestion, not a universal Windows 11 requirement or a confirmed fix. Ask the administrator to consider it only if it fits the router’s available options and network requirements; do not weaken security to obsolete modes. Microsoft Q&A

6. Escalate with useful details before trying broader resets

If the problem remains unresolved, give the PC or router manufacturer’s support team specific observations rather than only the error message:

  • Whether other devices can connect to this router.
  • Whether this PC can connect to another Wi-Fi network or hotspot.
  • Whether the failure affects one band or every band.
  • Whether the issue followed a Windows, driver, or router change.
  • The wireless adapter model and driver version.

A network reset or driver reinstall may remove saved network information, and neither is guaranteed to fix the problem. In one Microsoft Q&A report, the original poster tried network resets and driver reinstallation without resolving that case. Consider broader resets only after the checks above, and be prepared to reconnect to saved networks afterward. Microsoft Q&A

Should you try a USB Wi-Fi adapter?

An external USB Wi-Fi adapter is a possible later workaround if the built-in adapter is suspected and the PC supports an external one. A forum discussion mentions a USB dongle in a laptop connectivity context, but does not test it as a fix for this exact error. Confirm Windows 11 and hardware compatibility before considering one; an external adapter will not correct a wrong key or router-side problem. Ten Forums discussion
