For most Samsung refrigerators sold in the United States, Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator to 38°F and the freezer to -2°F. The screen shows a setting, not a direct reading of every spot where food is stored, so use a thermometer to check the actual temperature. Controls and recommendations vary by model and region; consult the manual for your appliance.
Recommended Samsung refrigerator and freezer temperatures
Samsung’s U.S. guidance recommends these settings for most models:

The recommended setting is a target for the appliance; the food-storage figures are upper limits, not suggested settings. Samsung Canada gives the equivalent targets as 3°C (38°F) for the refrigerator and -19°C (-2°F) for the freezer, and reports Health Canada thresholds of below 4°C (40°F) and below -18°C (0°F), respectively. How to change the temperature
Check your refrigerator’s model number and manual before following button instructions: Samsung uses different controls across models, and a sequence that works on one appliance may not work on another.

- Models with Fridge and Freezer buttons: On some models, press the relevant button repeatedly to cycle through settings.
- Touch-screen models: Change the temperature through the on-screen settings menu.
- Family Hub models: Samsung’s examples use the Fridge Manager widget to adjust temperatures.
- Some bar-display models: Samsung Canada identifies three illuminated bars as the standard setting for both compartments on certain models. Do not assume this applies to yours without checking its manual.

How to check the actual interior temperature
The number on the display represents a selected setting or an average; it does not prove that the food-storage area has reached that temperature. Samsung recommends checking with a thermometer.

- Check the refrigerator: Put a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment. Leave it there for up to eight hours, keeping door openings to a minimum.
- Check the freezer: Place the thermometer between frozen packages. Do not put it in water.
- Compare the reading with the food-storage thresholds: If the refrigerator is warmer than 40°F or the freezer warmer than 0°F, lower the corresponding setting.
- Allow the appliance to settle: Samsung advises waiting 28 hours after lowering a setting before checking again. Avoid unnecessary door openings during this period.
If your Samsung fridge still seems warm
Samsung Canada suggests checking basic conditions that can interfere with cooling before treating the problem as a fault:
- Make sure the doors close fully and their seals are not preventing a tight closure.
- Avoid overloading shelves or blocking vents, which can restrict airflow.
- Check for dust on the condenser coils and around ventilation areas, and clean as the manual directs.
If the temperature remains outside the food-storage limits after these checks and the stabilization period, consult the manual for your exact model or contact Samsung support. These checks are general troubleshooting guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular refrigerator.
