Wi-Fi Calling lets your phone place carrier calls through a Wi-Fi internet connection when cellular reception is weak or unavailable. To use it, you need a compatible phone, carrier and account, the feature enabled in settings, and a working internet connection. It can help you call from places with poor mobile coverage, but it does not guarantee every call will stay connected, cost nothing, or route emergency services using your current location.

What Wi-Fi Calling does—and what it needs

Wi-Fi Calling is a feature of your mobile service: your supported phone routes carrier voice calls over Wi-Fi instead of relying solely on a cellular connection. It is useful indoors or in other locations where mobile reception is poor, provided the Wi-Fi network has usable internet access. It is not an offline calling feature.

Availability depends on the carrier, device, region, and account. A Wi-Fi Calling switch in your phone’s settings does not by itself confirm that the carrier has enabled the service for your line. Check with your carrier if the feature is missing, will not activate, or does not work after setup. Apple’s carrier feature list covers the United States and Canada, not worldwide availability: Apple’s U.S. and Canada carrier support list.

How to turn on Wi-Fi Calling

On iPhone

  1. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and open Settings > Cellular.
  2. If you use more than one SIM or line, select the line you want to configure.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  4. If prompted, enter or confirm the address used for emergency services. Follow your carrier’s instructions and keep the address current.

Apple’s setup guidance is available in Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling and the iPhone User Guide. When Wi-Fi Calling is active, the iPhone may show Wi-Fi alongside the carrier name; the exact indicator can vary with software version.

On Android with Google’s Phone app guidance

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  2. Select the carrier SIM you want to use.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi calling and turn it on.

Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer, Android version, and carrier. If the option is absent, the carrier may not support Wi-Fi Calling for your device or account. Check Google’s Make calls over Wi-Fi guidance and ask your carrier whether your line is provisioned.

Can you call over Wi-Fi with no cellular signal?

Often, yes—if Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, the carrier supports it for your phone and account, and the phone has a working Wi-Fi internet connection. A cellular signal is not required for the Wi-Fi route itself, but service availability and behavior depend on the carrier. If both cellular service and usable Wi-Fi are unavailable, Wi-Fi Calling cannot place the call.

Do not assume a call will transfer seamlessly if Wi-Fi drops. Apple describes switching to cellular VoLTE when available and enabled; Google Fi says it selects the available network that provides the better experience and can move a call to cellular if Wi-Fi weakens or drops. Those are service-specific examples, not a guarantee for every carrier or device. See Apple’s iPhone guidance and Google Fi’s Wi-Fi calling information.

Does Wi-Fi Calling cost extra?

There is no universal price rule. Extra charges may apply, and the treatment of a call can depend on your carrier, plan, destination, and circumstances. Before relying on Wi-Fi Calling—especially for calls to other countries—check your provider’s current terms for your specific plan and destinations. Google’s guidance also directs users to their mobile service provider about possible charges: Google Phone app: Make calls over Wi-Fi.

Emergency calls over Wi-Fi: what to know

Emergency calling needs special caution. Apple says an iPhone uses cellular service for emergency calls when it is available; if cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Setup may ask you to confirm an emergency-services address. Some carriers may rely on the registered address, which may not match where you are when you call. Keep it current and read your carrier’s current emergency-calling instructions.

In the United States, the FCC’s 2021 report explains that Wi-Fi Calling 911 depends on the consumer enabling the service before placing calls over Wi-Fi, and that the Wi-Fi access point provides internet connectivity while the mobile core routes and processes the call. The FCC’s 2025 notice, FCC 25-22, discusses the continuing concern that a registered location may not correspond to a caller’s actual location and seeks comment on technical feasibility; it is a notice seeking comment, not a final new rule. See the FCC 2021 report and FCC 2025 notice.

Apple also notes that emergency alerts may not be received while connected to Wi-Fi Calling. Do not treat Wi-Fi Calling as a replacement for your carrier’s emergency guidance or assume that the registered address will identify your current location. Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling instructions explain its setup and emergency-call caveats.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  1. Confirm support and provisioning. Ask your carrier whether Wi-Fi Calling is supported for your exact phone, region, plan, and line. A visible setting alone is not proof of account support.
  2. Check the setting and line. Make sure Wi-Fi Calling is enabled for the intended SIM or line, particularly if your phone has multiple SIMs.
  3. Update and restart. Install available phone software updates, then restart the device.
  4. Test another Wi-Fi network. Not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling. If it works elsewhere, the original network may be the issue; if it does not, continue checking with your carrier.
  5. Contact the carrier if it persists. Ask whether the feature is active on your account and whether there are device-specific setup requirements.

These steps follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling. A router is not a special Wi-Fi Calling requirement, and replacing one will not solve an unsupported device or a carrier-provisioning problem.

What to check when comparing carrier or device support

There is no separate Wi-Fi Calling product to compare: it is a carrier feature. Before choosing or relying on a service, verify the points that affect your actual use:

  • Whether your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling for your exact device, account, and region.
  • Whether calls can use Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable.
  • Whether the carrier documents handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular, and what conditions apply.
  • How your plan treats domestic and international calls.
  • How emergency address registration and emergency alerts are handled.
  • Whether other devices associated with your account can place calls using Wi-Fi.

Confirm each item directly with the carrier for your country and plan; support can vary even among devices that display a Wi-Fi Calling setting.
