To add a password to a local account on an HP laptop running Windows 11, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Password > Add, enter and confirm the password, add a hint, then select Next and Finish. If you use a Microsoft account, or already have a password, the right steps are different.
Add a password to a local Windows account
HP’s Windows 11 instructions describe this process for a local user account. The menus are part of Windows, so HP branding does not change the basic Settings path.
- Sign in to the Windows account you want to secure.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. You can also search Windows for Sign-in options.
- Expand or select Password, then select Add.
- Enter the password you want to use, then enter it again to confirm.
- Enter a password hint, select Next, and then select Finish.
The account will require the new password the next time you sign in. HP documents the local-account Add flow in its Windows account and login instructions.
Check whether your account is local or a Microsoft account
A local account is specific to that PC. A Microsoft account uses the credentials for your Microsoft account to sign in to Windows and has separate online recovery options. The distinction matters: local-account security questions do not reset a Microsoft account password. See Microsoft’s overview of user account access in Windows.

If Password is already listed
If you know the current password and want to replace it, choose Change instead of Add. For a local account, Windows asks for the old password before you create a new one. Microsoft’s local-account password instructions cover both changing and resetting it.
If you use a Microsoft account
To change a known Microsoft-account password, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Password > Change and follow the prompts. This changes the Microsoft account credential, not a separate local-only password. If you have forgotten it, use I forgot my password at the sign-in screen, Web sign-in if offered, or Microsoft’s password-reset page. Follow the identity-verification steps.

Recover access if you forgot your password
Forgotten local-account password
At the Windows sign-in screen, select the password entry option, choose OK, then select Reset password. Answer the security questions you set up for the account. If you created a password-reset disk earlier, you can use that instead. Microsoft says a device reset may be necessary if no recovery method is available; HP cannot be assumed to recover a local account password. See Microsoft’s local-account recovery steps.
A password-reset disk is optional recovery media for a local account, not part of setting a password. Microsoft’s instructions for creating one specify that it works for local accounts, not Microsoft accounts.

Forgotten Microsoft-account password
Use I forgot my password on the sign-in screen, Web sign-in if available, or Microsoft’s online reset route. Microsoft will guide you through verifying your identity; see its Microsoft-account password guidance.
Password, PIN, and Windows Hello are different sign-in options
A Windows Hello PIN is distinct from your account password. Windows 11 can also offer face or fingerprint sign-in, depending on the PC’s hardware and configuration. None of these options is required to add a password. Microsoft describes Windows Hello as “a more personal and secure way to access your Windows device” in its Windows Hello configuration guidance.

- Use a password you do not reuse for another account.
- Keep it private and store any recovery information securely.
- A password manager is an optional way to store credentials; it is not required to configure Windows sign-in.
Microsoft and HP’s cited setup and recovery guidance does not prescribe a password length or a particular formula, so choose a password that meets the requirements Windows displays during setup.
