Bing turns a search into results through four broad stages: Bingbot discovers pages, Bing analyzes them for its index, ranking systems match a query to indexed content, and search features may add answers, suggestions, or summaries. Microsoft describes this process and several ranking considerations publicly, but not a complete ranking formula; inclusion or submission does not guarantee a page will appear or rank.
How does Bing find and index pages?
1. Bingbot discovers and crawls pages
Microsoft calls its web crawler Bingbot. It finds new and updated pages, then uses an algorithm to decide what to crawl and how often, with the stated aim of limiting the impact on websites. Microsoft says it prioritizes relevant pages it knows about but has not indexed, as well as pages it believes have changed. Its support page, last updated in March 2025, says Bingbot crawls billions of URLs every day; that is Microsoft’s own scale statement, not an independently audited count. Microsoft’s overview of how Bing delivers search results.
2. Bing analyzes crawled content for its index
Bingbot sends information about what it finds to Bing. Bing’s systems analyze pages and other content types and add eligible material to the index, the collection available for matching against searches. A page must be indexed to be returned as a result, but submitting a URL is not a guarantee of indexing.
How does Bing rank search results?
When someone searches, Bing uses algorithms, including machine learning, to match the query with third-party pages in its index. Microsoft publishes a high-level list of factors, not the full technical formula. It cautions that “The relative importance of each of the parameters below may vary from search to search and evolve over time.”

| Factor Microsoft names | What it can mean |
|---|---|
| Relevance | How well a page meets the searcher’s intent. Bing considers page text, phrases in links pointing to the page, and semantic equivalents such as synonyms and abbreviations. A query can also have more than one plausible intent. |
| Quality and credibility | Site purpose, usability, presentation, reputation, links, depth of discussion, distinction between fact and opinion, and whether information is original and transparently attributed. |
| User engagement | Examples include whether users click a result, spend time on it, return quickly, or reformulate a query. These are examples in Microsoft’s description, not a published scoring rule. |
| Freshness | Whether content is up to date. Some pages remain useful for years; others become outdated quickly. |
| Location and language | The searcher’s location, the page’s hosting location and language, and the location of other visitors may be relevant. |
| Page load time | Slow loading may create a poor experience and lead visitors to leave. |
Microsoft also says its web-ranking models use automated signals, including user interactions, and training data labeled by human judges and/or AI systems with human oversight. It says it monitors and adjusts ranking practices. This is a general description; it does not reveal unpublished model details or make any particular ranking predictable. Microsoft’s ranking overview and its August 2024 EU Digital Services Act systemic risk assessment provide further context.
Why can a Bing results page show more than links?
Answers and summaries
Bing may place an enhanced answer above or beside ordinary web listings. It can summarize information from web results and link to sources; certain answers may use generative AI. A query such as “How tall is the Eiffel Tower?” illustrates the kind of question that may receive a direct answer. Business searches can show details such as opening hours and location. Microsoft’s descriptions do not mean every query, region, device, or version will show the same feature, or that an AI summary is error-free. Microsoft’s search-results explanation.

A 2023 Microsoft responsible AI report described the new Bing AI experience as drawing on top web results and including references to help users reach material used to ground a summary. That is a dated description of that experience, not a guarantee about every current AI answer. Microsoft’s 2023 Responsible AI Transparency Report.
Specialized search experiences
Bing also has image, video, news, maps, and shopping experiences. Microsoft says they generally use core ranking principles but may apply additional considerations. Which formats appear depends on the query and availability.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAutosuggest and related searches
Autosuggest predicts queries while a person types; related suggestions offer possible next topics. Microsoft says suggestions can use the popularity of related searches along with signals such as search history, trends, location, and language, as well as natural-language generation trained on query sets. These suggestions are proposals, not a definitive reading of what the user intends. Microsoft’s explanation of Bing suggestions.
What can publishers do to help Bing discover a page?
These practices can make pages easier for Bing to find and process. They are discovery and indexing aids, not a recipe that guarantees ranking.

- Keep a sitemap updated. Make sure it lists the pages you want Bing to discover and reflects meaningful changes.
- Notify Bing when content changes. Microsoft recommends IndexNow or Bing URL/Content Submission APIs to signal new or updated URLs.
- Use crawlable links. Link important pages from other discoverable pages so a crawler can follow a path to them.
- Make content available to Bingbot. Use rendering that lets the crawler access the page’s meaningful content, and configure redirects appropriately.
- Check indexing directives and crawler access. Avoid accidental
noindexornofollowbarriers where indexing is desired, and configurerobots.txtto manage crawler access.
Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster guidance explains these discovery and indexing practices. A crawler being allowed to visit a URL does not itself ensure that Bing will index it.

Ranking and presentation can change with the query, location, language, freshness, and other factors. Microsoft says features may vary across countries, regions, devices, and versions. As of August 2024, Microsoft described Bing as supporting over 200 market versions and over 100 languages; those are dated figures, not current counts. Microsoft’s August 2024 assessment.

Indexing is also not the only reason a result may be missing or presented differently. Microsoft says it balances open access with privacy, safety, local law, and other interests. It describes possible removals or downranking for some policy or legal reasons, warnings or added context for harmful results, SafeSearch controls, and additional algorithmic interventions against manipulation in higher-risk areas.
