You can add RAM only if your exact laptop model supports a user-replaceable memory module. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and service guide before buying or opening the laptop; those documents determine whether an upgrade is possible and which memory will fit. More RAM may help when your current capacity is limiting the apps you use, but it is not a guaranteed speed boost for every laptop.

Check whether your laptop’s RAM is upgradeable

Look up the laptop manufacturer, exact model number, and model generation or sub-model. Use the official specifications and maintenance or service guide to find out whether memory is replaceable, whether a slot is accessible, and the supported maximum capacity. Some laptops have no user-accessible memory slots or use memory that cannot be replaced.

In Windows, Task Manager can show installed memory and provide a view of slot use. Treat that as a helpful clue, not proof that a particular upgrade is supported: confirm the configuration in the documentation for your exact laptop. Microsoft’s laptop RAM guide and HP’s memory-upgrade instructions also direct readers to check device-specific support information.

Choose RAM that matches the laptop

For an upgradeable laptop with an accessible slot, the usual module format is SO-DIMM, but that label alone does not establish compatibility. Match the memory against the laptop’s own documentation before ordering.

A-Tech DDR4 RAM 16GB 3200MHz PC4-25600 SODIMM Laptop Memory
  • A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
  • Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
  • Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
  • Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
  • Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
  • Memory generation: Check the supported generation, such as the type specified by the manufacturer.
  • Form factor: Confirm the module type and physical form factor supported by the laptop.
  • Speed: Compare the supported memory speed with the module specification.
  • Capacity: Check both the maximum capacity per slot and the total supported system capacity.
  • Slots and existing memory: Confirm how many usable slots the model has and what is already installed.

A memory vendor’s compatibility selector, such as Crucial’s upgrade selector, can help narrow options. Use the laptop manufacturer’s service documentation as the authority for the supported configuration. Do not choose a capacity or module based on a general recommendation without identifying the laptop model.

Prepare before opening the laptop

Get the service guide for the exact model and follow its instructions for shutting down, disconnecting the power source or battery, removing the cover, and accessing memory. Procedures vary between laptops, so a general SO-DIMM guide cannot replace the device-specific steps. Check the manufacturer’s warranty guidance if opening the chassis may affect coverage.

Use the electrostatic-discharge precautions described by the memory vendor. Crucial’s DRAM installation guide and Kingston’s laptop memory installation guide explain handling and installation precautions.

Install a SO-DIMM module

  1. Shut the laptop down and disconnect power and the battery as directed in the model’s service guide.
  2. Remove the chassis cover and locate the user-accessible memory slot, following the guide’s instructions.
  3. Align the module’s notch with the slot and insert it at an angle.
  4. Press the module down until the retaining clips engage and hold it in place.
  5. Reassemble the laptop as directed by the service guide.

The module should align with the slot without force. If the notch or connector does not match, stop and recheck the memory type and generation rather than pushing it into place.

Verify the upgrade and troubleshoot problems

Start the laptop and check the operating system’s reported memory amount. If it is lower than expected, shut the laptop down and reseat the module using the service guide’s procedure. If the system will not boot or still does not detect the memory, consult the laptop documentation and manufacturer support instead of repeatedly forcing or repositioning components.

Additional RAM can improve performance when limited memory is holding back the programs or workload you run. If memory capacity is not the constraint, adding RAM does not guarantee a noticeable improvement.
