Microsoft does not provide a sanctioned download or supported Windows 11 installation procedure for classic Windows Movie Maker. Windows Movie Maker was part of Windows Essentials 2012, which Microsoft says became unsupported and unavailable for download on January 10, 2017. If your goal is simply to edit video, Microsoft points Windows 11 users to Clipchamp.
Is classic Windows Movie Maker available for Windows 11?
No official Windows 11 installer is documented by Microsoft. Its Windows Essentials 2012 support page says the suite, which included Windows Movie Maker, ceased to be supported and became unavailable for download on January 10, 2017. That page applies to Windows 10; it establishes the suite’s support and download status, not whether an archived copy will run on Windows 11.
Microsoft warns: “Any websites offering free downloads of Windows Movie Maker are not offering sanctioned Microsoft products.” Such sites may also expose visitors to viruses or hidden costs. A download page claiming to offer the original program is not an official Microsoft source, and Microsoft does not certify those files as safe.
Can an old installer be tried?
A copy of Windows Live Essentials or Movie Maker installation media that you already own might be possible to try, but that is an unsupported attempt, not a Microsoft-recommended Windows 11 installation path. Microsoft does not guarantee that archived installers or media will install or run on a current Windows 11 PC.

A Microsoft Q&A response from an Independent Advisor discusses trying existing Windows Live Essentials media and says compatibility is unlikely for Movie Maker 6.0. That is community advice, not an official Microsoft compatibility statement or a verified step-by-step procedure. The Q&A does not establish that a particular copy will work on your PC.
How to open Microsoft’s video editor on Windows 11
If you need a supported Microsoft editing option rather than the exact classic program, Microsoft says Clipchamp is included on Windows 11 devices. To find it:

- Search for Clipchamp and open the app if it appears.
- If it is not installed, get Clipchamp from Microsoft Store.
Microsoft describes Clipchamp as able to combine and edit video clips, images, and music; add text and visual effects; and export a finished video to your computer. Its Windows 11 guidance also lists transitions, music, special effects, screen and webcam recording, green-screen editing, overlays, and AI voiceovers. These are Microsoft’s feature descriptions, not a claim that Clipchamp is identical to Movie Maker.
