For clean finish cuts on a compatible 12-inch miter saw, start by comparing 80-tooth blades marketed for fine finishing. If the finest finish is your priority, a manufacturer-labeled 100-tooth ultra-fine-finish blade is another option. Neither tooth count guarantees a particular result: match the blade to your saw, material, and cut, and verify fit before installation.
Which blade should you choose for smooth cuts?
An 80-tooth fine-finish blade is a practical starting point for comparing blades intended for cleaner cuts. A 100-tooth blade may suit work where the manufacturer specifically positions it for an ultra-fine finish. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results from a head-to-head test or a universal rule about tooth count.
Choose for the workpiece and cut as well as the desired edge. The cited Makita examples list 40- and 60-tooth blades for wood and construction lumber; its 80-tooth example is listed for wood, hardwood, and plywood. DEWALT labels its 80-tooth blade fine finish and its 100-tooth blade ultra-fine finish. Check the current product listing for the precise material and saw-use recommendations.

Check compatibility before installing a blade
A 12-inch diameter alone does not establish that a blade fits your saw. Follow the saw manual and verify each candidate blade’s specifications against it.

- Diameter: Confirm the saw is designed for a 12-inch blade.
- Arbor: Match the arbor size, and use reducing hardware only if the saw manufacturer approves it.
- Kerf and plate thickness: Check that the blade dimensions are permitted by the saw manual.
- Maximum RPM: The blade’s rating must be suitable for the saw’s no-load speed. For context, the cited Makita 80-tooth example is rated up to 5,000 RPM; this is not a standard for all 12-inch blades.
- Material and cut: Confirm that the manufacturer lists the blade for the workpiece and intended cut.
Tooth grind and hook angle are additional comparison points, but specifications do not by themselves prove which blade will produce the smoothest edge on your particular saw and stock. For example, Makita lists ATAF grind and a 5° hook angle for its A-93728.
If a new blade seems to hit the kerf plate
Blade contact with the kerf plate is not necessarily evidence that the blade is defective. DEWALT support says, for the model addressed, the slot is precut for 90-degree cuts and must be widened for 45-degree bevel cuts according to the saw manual. What the available specifications cannot tell you
The cited manufacturer pages provide product specifications and intended-use descriptions, not a controlled comparison of cut quality. They do not establish a universal best blade or independently measured differences in chip-out, cutting speed, noise, durability, price, or warranty. Treat finish labels and design claims as manufacturer positioning, and recheck current specifications and availability before purchasing.
