If your Android phone’s screen is black, first connect it to a compatible charger and check the cable, outlet, and phone for damage. Then try the restart procedure for your exact model. A black display does not by itself mean the phone is dead: it may be out of charge, frozen, or running with a display that is not showing an image.
1. Check whether the phone is charging safely
Connect the phone to a working outlet with a compatible charger and cable. Make sure both ends are firmly connected. If possible, try another compatible cable or power adapter. Remove a case or accessory that could cover the port or obstruct the buttons, and look for visible damage to the phone, cable, charger, or port. Do not insert objects into the port.
If the phone may have been exposed to liquid, stop routine charging attempts and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance. Charging a device that may be wet can create additional risk.
Charging indicators and timing vary by model:
- Google’s general Android guidance says to wait one minute after connecting working charging equipment. A battery icon indicates the phone is powered off and charging; a flashing red light may indicate that there is not enough charge to turn on. Google recommends charging for at least 30 minutes in that case before restarting. Google Android Help
- Samsung’s US guidance recommends charging for at least one hour and notes that its charging indicator can take up to 10 minutes to appear. Samsung Support US
These indicators are not universal: a blank screen or lack of a light does not, on its own, prove that the phone is not charging.

2. Force-restart the phone using the right button procedure
A force restart can help if the phone has frozen, but the button sequence and hold time depend on the manufacturer and model. Do not assume one combination works on every Android phone.
General Android instructions
For a blank screen, Google’s general Android instructions say to hold the Power button for about 35 seconds. Release it, wait about two minutes for the phone to restart, then call the phone from another device. Google Android Help

Samsung phones and tablets
Samsung Support US instructs users to hold the Power/Side button and Volume Down together for 20 seconds. If the device has a removable battery, Samsung gives a different procedure for that design. Follow the instructions for your specific model if these steps do not match it. After a reboot, a Samsung phone with biometric security may require its backup password instead of a fingerprint or face unlock. Samsung Support US
Do not confuse a blank-screen restart with a frozen-screen restart
Google gives a separate instruction of holding Power for about 30 seconds for a phone that is frozen with its screen on. If the display is black, use the blank-screen guidance or your manufacturer’s model-specific procedure instead. Google Android Help

3. Find out whether the phone is running
After charging and restart checks, call the phone from another device. You can also use Google’s Find Hub if it is available for your device. Check closely for a very dim image as well; low brightness can make a display difficult to see.
If the phone rings but the display remains blank, that is evidence the phone is active, not proof of which component has failed. Google recommends contacting an authorized repair center in this situation. Google Android Help

4. If the screen returns, check for recurring freezes
If the phone becomes usable but later freezes or stops responding again, check for Android and app updates, review available storage, and consider whether the problem began after installing an app. Google says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” This is general troubleshooting guidance, not a statistic about black screens. Use Safe mode to test downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. Start it using your manufacturer’s instructions; the steps vary by device. If the problem stops in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a likely cause. You can then restart normally and review recently installed apps. Google Android Help

5. Protect your data before considering a factory reset
A factory reset erases data on the device and uninstalls apps. It is not an early or universal fix for a blank display, especially when the phone may have a hardware problem. Back up first if you can use the phone; some app data may not be included in a backup. Reset menus and recovery procedures vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device. Google Android Help · Android.com
If preserving local data matters and the display is unusable, contact manufacturer support or a qualified repair provider before attempting a reset. For Pixel 3 and later, Android.com describes Google’s Update and Software Repair tool, but its page does not establish that data is preserved in every situation. Android.com
6. When to contact support or arrange repair
Seek service if the phone rings or otherwise appears active but its screen stays blank, or if charging and the correct model-specific restart procedure do not restore the display. Samsung says that when its restart and charging steps fail to turn on the screen, the device needs service. Google Pixel support directs users to review repair or replacement options and warranty status when its listed steps fail.
