Turn the Windows 11 startup sound off or on
- Open Start, type Change system sounds, and select the matching result.
- In the Sounds dialog, open the Sounds tab.
- Clear Play Windows Startup sound to disable the chime, or select the checkbox to enable it.
- Select Apply or OK to save the change.
The checkbox controls the startup chime specifically. You do not need to mute your speakers or change the overall Windows sound scheme. Microsoft-hosted community guidance identifies this checkbox, and Lenovo Support describes the same setting for Windows 10 and 11.
Open the Sounds dialog through Settings
If you prefer to navigate through Windows menus, open Settings > System > Sound > Sound control panel, then select the Sounds tab. Toggle Play Windows Startup sound and save with Apply or OK. Microsoft documents the Sound control panel route for changing Windows event sounds on its Surface audio support page.
If the startup sound still plays
First reopen the Sounds dialog and verify that the checkbox is cleared and the change was saved. Windows audio settings also let you check the selected output device and other audio settings; Microsoft’s general audio troubleshooting guidance covers those checks, but it does not identify one universal cause for a startup-specific sound that continues after disabling the checkbox.

Avoid treating Registry Editor changes as a routine next step. Microsoft warns that incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems, including instability or Windows failing to start. The startup-sound setting is available directly in the Sounds dialog, so registry editing is unnecessary for the normal on/off change.
