To reset Xbox Game Bar, open its Advanced options in Windows Settings. Choose Repair first if it is available; choose Reset only if Repair is missing or does not solve the problem. Repair keeps app data, while Reset deletes it and reinstalls the app.
Open Xbox Game Bar’s Advanced options
The menu path depends on your Windows version. Microsoft notes that Repair and Reset are not available for every app, so the controls may be missing on some PCs.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox Game Bar and select the More icon beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair if it is available. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Xbox Game Bar, then select Advanced options.
- Select Repair if it is available. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset.
These are Microsoft’s documented Windows Settings steps for app repair and reset (Windows 10; Windows 11). Labels and available controls can vary by app and version.
Repair or Reset: what is the difference?
Microsoft’s app-package guidance says Repair attempts to reload an app while retaining its data. Reset deletes the app’s data and installs it fresh; preferences and sign-in details may be lost. You may need to configure Game Bar again after resetting. These are general Windows app behaviors, not a guarantee that resetting Xbox Game Bar will fix every problem (Microsoft Learn: Reset or Repair MSIX apps).

Resetting Game Bar is not resetting Windows
The Reset button in Game Bar’s Advanced options applies to that app. It is different from Reset this PC, which reinstalls Windows and, depending on the option selected, can remove apps, settings, and personal files. Microsoft advises backing up important files before resetting a PC (Windows recovery options).
If Repair or Reset is missing or does not work
If the Advanced options page does not show Repair or Reset, those controls may not be offered for your app or Windows version. If Reset does not solve the problem, seek current Microsoft or Xbox support for your exact error and Windows version. For example, a Microsoft Q&A post describes a user-reported case where Windows + G opens Game Bar but recording is unavailable; that example is not an official diagnosis or evidence of how common the issue is (Microsoft Q&A).

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft (Windows 10 support ends).
