This guide covers U.S. federal Social Security reporting. If your gig work is treated as self-employment, Social Security tax generally is not a platform deduction: you report net earnings on your federal tax return, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses that information to update your earnings record. If you are treated as an employee, payroll withholding generally applies instead. Check your status, compare your filed tax return with your SSA record, and ask SSA to correct confirmed errors.

First, find out whether your gig work is employee work or self-employment

A platform’s label alone does not settle your tax status. Employee work generally involves Social Security and Medicare taxes withheld through payroll. Self-employed workers generally report business income and expenses and calculate self-employment tax on a federal return. If you are unsure, the IRS advises asking the payer or employer or checking your worker status: IRS guidance on worker status.

For self-employment, the relevant figure is generally net earnings after allowable business expenses, not the gross amount a platform paid you. A platform payment summary or Form 1099 by itself does not show that your earnings were reported to SSA.

How self-employed gig earnings reach your Social Security record

Self-employed sole proprietors generally report business income and expenses on Schedule C and use Schedule SE to calculate self-employment tax. The IRS says net earnings of at least $400 generally require Schedule SE, subject to exceptions and special circumstances. That is the threshold in the IRS instructions for tax year 2025; check the instructions for the tax year you are filing: 2025 Schedule SE instructions.

The IRS explains that “The Social Security Administration uses the information from Schedule SE to figure your benefits under the social security program.” See IRS Topic 554 for the general tax treatment. This is why you should compare your SSA record with the return you actually filed, including any amended return, rather than relying only on platform summaries. Gig income generally must be reported even if you did not receive an information return.

For context, the IRS describes the standard self-employment tax components as 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. For tax year 2025, up to $176,100 of self-employment income was subject to the Social Security component; these are year-specific figures, and other rules can affect the calculation. Do not reuse the 2025 wage base for another tax year without checking current IRS instructions.

How to check your Social Security earnings record

  1. Sign in to your personal my Social Security account. Review the earnings history year by year and compare it with your records. SSA recommends reviewing the record annually: SSA: Review your earnings record.
  2. For self-employment years, check the filed return. Compare the record with the return information used to report your net earnings, especially Schedule SE and relevant business schedules. Keep the filed return and proof of filing.
  3. If you cannot use the online account, request a statement or contact SSA. SSA provides options to request a Social Security Statement by mail or get help by phone. Its guidance notes that current-year and prior-year earnings may not yet appear.

SSA says, “If you’re self-employed, you tell us directly.” For self-employed workers, that reporting takes place through federal tax filing; it is not a separate Social Security deduction shown on a platform payout.

What to do if earnings are missing or incorrect

Check timing before treating a recent blank year as an error

Current-year and prior-year earnings may not yet be listed. SSA does not give one universal posting date, so a blank recent year does not by itself prove the earnings were permanently omitted. Check that the relevant return was filed and allow for the possibility that the record has not been updated.

Gather documents that show what you reported and earned

Compare each year with your filed federal return and, where useful, platform summaries, business records, and receipts. Preserve copies of Schedule SE and supporting business schedules, as well as proof of filing. SSA says tax returns and other documents showing work can support a correction request: SSA publication on correcting your earnings record.

Request a correction from SSA

SSA says some corrections can be requested online through my Social Security. If the online option is not available for your case, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213; TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. SSA may direct you to Form SSA-7008 or ask for supporting records. See SSA: How do I correct my earnings record?

SSA’s ordinary correction limit is 3 years, 3 months, and 15 days after the end of the taxable year in which the earnings were received. Exceptions exist, including certain corrections supported by tax returns or agency records. If the year is outside the ordinary window, contact SSA promptly rather than assuming correction is impossible.

Keep records secure and use official channels

Keep filed returns, schedules, receipts, and platform statements in a secure location so you can compare years and support a correction. Use official IRS and SSA accounts and contact channels for sensitive tax or identity information. Do not send your Social Security number or tax documents through a platform message or an unverified service.
