On a Samsung washing machine, 5C means the washer has detected a drainage problem: water is not draining properly. Samsung also uses 5E for this type of issue in some guidance. The code points to a symptom, not a confirmed failed pump. Start by checking the drain hose and, if your model has one, its debris filter.
What 5C means—and what it does not
Samsung’s support guidance describes 5C as a drainage issue. Water may remain in the drum, or the washer may be unable to complete a drain step. A clog or installation problem can cause the symptom; seeing 5C alone does not establish that the drain pump has failed. How to troubleshoot a Samsung washer showing 5C
- Check the exact model’s instructions. Find the full model number and consult its manual before disconnecting hoses or opening a filter. Filter access and drainage instructions differ by washer type and model.
- Inspect the drain hose and household drain. Look along the hose for kinks, bends, blockage, or freezing, and check that it is connected and installed as the model manual specifies. Also make sure the household drain can accept water. Samsung US identifies incorrect drain-hose installation as a common reason for drainage trouble in its no-drain troubleshooting guidance.
- Clear a blockage only with the washer safely isolated. If you need to disconnect the drain hose to check it, switch off and unplug the washer first. Reconnect it securely before checking drainage again.
- Clean the debris filter if your model has a removable one. Samsung’s US instructions say the removable-filter procedure applies to front-load washers. Do not assume every Samsung washer has a user-accessible filter; confirm the procedure for your model.
- Test drainage again. If the 5C display remains or the washer still will not drain after the applicable checks, contact Samsung support or an authorized repair service for model-specific diagnosis.
How to clean the filter without flooding the floor
Opening the filter area can release residual water. Prepare towels and a shallow dish before starting, and use the emergency drain hose if your washer has one to drain the remaining water first. Samsung US warns that water left after a hot cycle may be very hot and advises waiting about an hour before opening the filter area. Follow the instructions for your own model rather than applying a procedure from another washer.
- Place towels and a shallow container in front of the filter access area.
- If fitted, pull out the emergency drain hose and remove its cap to drain residual water into the container. Replace the cap and return the hose when draining is complete.
- Remove the filter as described in the manual. Clear lint and small objects, rinse the filter, and wipe debris from its recess.
- Reinstall the filter and secure it fully before operating the washer.
Samsung’s UK drainage instructions describe filter cleaning and emergency draining; its US guidance on cleaning the washer pump filter specifies which washer types the removable-filter step applies to.

Use the drain-height specification for your model and region
Drain-hose height is not a single global specification. Samsung’s UK page says a standpipe hose should be at least 60 cm above the floor; its France guidance gives 60–90 cm, while US installation guidance uses different dimensions and cautions about certain arrangements. Those figures apply to their respective guidance, not every washer or installation. Arrange support if the hose and household drain are clear, any applicable filter has been cleaned and secured, and the washer still cannot drain or continues to show 5C. The code does not identify which internal component, if any, needs repair. Samsung advises contacting support or repair service when the issue persists after basic checks; use the support route for your country and provide the full model number.
