The best PC controller depends on how you play: the GameSir G7 Pro Tri-Mode is PC Gamer’s all-around pick, while its other recommendations suit budget buyers, competitive play, couch gaming, and wired use. These are recommendations attributed to PC Gamer’s August 2026 guide, not results of hands-on testing for this article. Before choosing, check that the exact model and package sold in your region support your PC and preferred connection.
At a glance: five PC controller picks

The product picks and category labels above reflect PC Gamer’s August 2026 controller guide. Features and estimates in the table are reported by that guide unless otherwise noted; they are not a direct comparison test.
How to choose a PC gaming controller
Start with connection and platform support
For a wireless desk setup, check whether the controller connects by a 2.4 GHz dongle, Bluetooth, or both. A USB cable can provide a wired option and may be useful when charging. Confirm whether the dongle and cable are included in the precise package you plan to buy. Platform support is not interchangeable across similarly named products: check the manufacturer’s listing for the exact model and your operating system.
Pick the layout and controls you will use
Choose an Xbox-style or PlayStation-style stick and button layout based on familiarity and game support. Standard controls are enough for many players; remappable buttons or rear paddles can make extra inputs easier to reach in games that use them. If you play from a couch or want to navigate a desktop as well as games, trackpads and gyro may be more useful than a conventional pad’s extra buttons.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Understand stick and polling specifications
Hall-effect and TMR sticks use different sensing approaches from conventional potentiometer sticks. These specifications can help distinguish models, but they do not establish that a controller will make someone better at a game or guarantee a particular lifespan. Likewise, a high polling rate is a technical specification, not proof of a perceptible improvement: the benefit depends on the controller, connection, PC, game, and player.
Check battery, charging and specialty features
If you choose wireless, consider the maker’s or reviewer’s battery estimate and how the controller charges. Treat review battery figures as estimates, not guarantees for every setup. Haptics, adaptive triggers and gyro also depend on game and software support. For example, TechRadar says DualSense Edge works well on PC and notes that haptics and adaptive triggers are available in PlayStation Studios PC ports and some other titles, but support is game-dependent. See its PC controller roundup for that alternative.

Best all-around wireless controller: GameSir G7 Pro Tri-Mode
PC Gamer names the GameSir G7 Pro Tri-Mode its overall and wireless pick. The guide reports 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and USB Type-C connectivity, TMR sticks, textured grips and an included charging dock. Its reported battery estimate is about 10 hours; actual runtime can vary with use.
This is the most flexible choice in this lineup if you want to switch between wireless methods or use a cable, and you value a dock. Check the product listing in your region for compatible platforms, exact package contents and current price rather than assuming every market gets the same bundle.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
Best budget choice: GameSir Nova Lite
PC Gamer’s budget pick, the GameSir Nova Lite, has Hall-effect thumbsticks and supports a low-latency 2.4 GHz dongle, Bluetooth and USB-C wired play. The guide lists compatibility with PC, Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, and reports approximately 10 hours of battery life.
Its omissions matter if you want extra inputs or headset audio through the controller: PC Gamer notes that it lacks extra buttons and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Confirm the exact Nova Lite version before buying, since similarly named products may differ in supported platforms.
Rank #4
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.

Best high-end competitive pick: Razer Wolverine V3 Pro 8K PC
The Razer Wolverine V3 Pro 8K PC is aimed at players who want extensive customization and a specialized polling-rate specification. Razer says it supports 8,000 Hz polling when connected to a PC by wire or wireless, and specifies Windows 11 64-bit or higher. The package includes a wireless USB-A dongle and a 2 m cable; Razer’s page also documents six remappable buttons and Synapse 4 customization. PC Gamer lists TMR thumbsticks, Hall-effect triggers and customizable profiles.
Do not confuse it with Razer’s separate Wolverine V3 Pro, which is documented for wireless Xbox and PC use. Razer lists that model at 250 Hz normally and up to 1,000 Hz in PC Tournament Mode; those specifications belong to that model, not the 8K PC version. The 8,000 Hz figure is a manufacturer specification, and it does not mean every PC or game will deliver a visible or competitive benefit.

Best for couch gaming and desktop navigation: Valve Steam Controller (2026)
The Steam Controller (2026) fills a different role from a conventional desk pad. PC Gamer lists two trackpads, gyro, haptics and TMR sticks, with connection options including a puck-based 2.4 GHz connection, Bluetooth and USB-C. Its guide reports more than 35 hours of battery life. TechRadar lists PC, Mac, iOS and Android compatibility and says non-Steam games can work, while recommending Steam integration for the best experience.
Trackpads can make mouse-like input and desktop navigation more practical from a sofa, particularly for games designed around mouse controls. This is a specialized choice rather than the simplest budget or console-style controller; its appeal depends on whether you want that trackpad-centered way to play.
Best wired controller: Scuf Valor Pro
For players who prefer not to rely on a wireless connection or battery, PC Gamer’s wired pick is the Scuf Valor Pro. The guide lists USB Type-C, Hall-effect sticks, rear paddles, removable thumbsticks, magnetic faceplates and adjustable trigger feel. Its defining trade-off is that it is wired. PC Gamer reported an asking price of roughly $100 at review time; that is not a current-price guarantee, so check the seller’s listing.
Other controllers worth considering

TechRadar selects the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 as its own closest one-size-fits-all choice, citing its build, versatility and price. It reports PC connectivity through 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth or USB-C, plus a charging dock. This is an alternative editorial pick, not evidence that one controller is best for every player.

- Want to spend less? Consider the GameSir Nova Lite if its simpler controls and lack of a headset jack fit your needs.
