The Whynter ARC-14S is a capable dual-hose portable air conditioner, but its headline 14,000-BTU rating does not tell the whole story. Whynter also lists a 9,500-BTU DOE 2017 rating, and RTINGS measured 5,784 BTU/hr under its full-thermal-load test. The ARC-14S can suit a living room or office, yet its fixed-speed compressor, substantial operating noise, and measured power use make it a less convincing choice if quiet, efficient temperature maintenance is your priority.
What the Whynter ARC-14S is—and what its ratings mean
The ARC-14S is a dual-hose portable air conditioner with cooling, fan, and dehumidifier modes. Whynter rates it at 14,000 BTU using the ASHRAE rating system and 9,500 BTU SACC under DOE 2017. Those figures use different rating systems; the larger ASHRAE number should not be treated as interchangeable with the DOE figure. Whynter’s product page and owner manual list both.
Other manufacturer specifications include coverage up to 500 square feet, dehumidification up to 71 pints per day, three fan speeds, a 61°F–89°F thermostat range, and a noise rating below 51 dBA on low and below 56 dBA on high. These are Whynter’s published specifications, not guarantees that every room will reach or hold a chosen temperature.
How well does it cool a room?
Whynter claims the ARC-14S can cover up to 500 square feet. Actual results depend on factors such as room layout and conditions: an enclosed room is a different challenge from a large open-concept area. RTINGS describes the model as decent for large rooms, but says it can struggle to cool a larger open-concept space quickly.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual Hose Cooling Power: The Whynter Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner puts out 14,000 BTU for rooms up to 500 square feet, using a second hose to feed the condenser for faster, steadier cooling
- Three Operational Modes: Switch between cooling, dehumidifying, and fan-only circulation from the digital control panel or the included remote, so one stand-alone unit covers changing conditions
- Reliable Moisture Removal: The built-in dehumidifier pulls damp air out of the room and the auto drain function recycles that water through the exhaust, so there is no bucket to empty by hand
- No Permanent Installation: Easy mobility and flexible placement let this free-standing unit move to wherever the heat collects, so you cool the room you are actually in with no structural work
- Whynter Difference: Designed to redefine everyday comfort with portable, high-quality appliances backed by innovation, efficiency, and dependable performance
In RTINGS’ test, updated on September 15, 2026, the ARC-14S delivered 5,784 BTU/hr of cooling capacity at full thermal load, compared with its stated 9,500 BTU/hr advertised DOE capacity. That is a result from RTINGS’ test conditions, not a revised manufacturer rating or a prediction for every household. RTINGS published its review on June 6, 2025; see its review and test details for methodology.
Noise: a real drawback for bedrooms and quiet spaces
Whynter’s published noise figures are below 51 dBA on low and below 56 dBA on high. RTINGS measured higher levels in its test: 61.2 dBA with the compressor on at maximum setting, 58.3 dBA with it off at maximum fan, 59.3 dBA with the compressor on at minimum setting, and 53.1 dBA with it off at minimum fan. These figures come from different measurement conditions and methods, so they are not direct like-for-like comparisons. RTINGS warns that compressor noise may be distracting in a bedroom or living room.

The ARC-14S has a fixed-speed compressor. RTINGS notes that inverter models, including the Whynter NEX ARC-1230WN and Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL, can be quieter at low load and more efficient while maintaining a set temperature. If quiet nighttime operation or steady low-load performance matters, compare compressor-on noise and test methods rather than relying on a single advertised dBA number.
Power use and efficiency
Whynter’s manual lists a maximum input of 1,300 watts and 11.6 amps at 115 volts. In RTINGS’ full-thermal-load test, the unit consumed 653 Wh and had an EER of 4.4; while maintaining temperature, it consumed 351 Wh and had an EER of 3.2. These are reviewer measurements under RTINGS’ test conditions, not expected hourly consumption or a household electricity bill. Actual use varies with thermostat setting, room temperature, insulation, and compressor runtime. Whynter points buyers to the yellow EnergyGuide label for estimated annual energy use and cost.

Installation: check the window kit and keep the hoses short
The kit’s listed adjustable window span is inconsistent on Whynter’s own product page: one section says 20–46 inches, while another gives a 56-inch maximum. The manual also lists 20–46 inches. Confirm the dimensions of the kit supplied with the exact unit version before purchase or installation.
The product page lists 5.9-inch intake and exhaust hoses and a maximum hose length of 60 inches. Whynter’s product guidance and manual caution against extending the exhaust hose beyond 9 feet. The manual’s advice is to “Keep the exhaust hose as short and straight as possible.” The unit measures approximately 19 × 16 × 35.5 inches; the manual gives the dimensions as 19 × 16 × 35.5 inches, while the product page orders width and depth as 16 × 19 × 35.5 inches. Its listed weight is 73 pounds, so plan for a substantial appliance rather than a lightweight window unit.

Does the ARC-14S need to be drained?
It has auto-evaporation, which expels much of the condensation through the exhaust, but that does not eliminate draining in every situation. Whynter says high humidity can produce moisture faster than the unit can exhaust it, triggering a stop or full-water code. Its FAQ recommends continuous drainage with a hose or manual draining into a shallow pan; an optional ARC-DB bucket is another stated option. Whynter says this model has no pump and no upper gravity-drain port. See the Whynter FAQ for its drainage guidance.

Whynter recommends plugging the unit directly into a properly grounded wall outlet rated for its maximum load. It advises against lightweight extension cords and undersized power strips, and says not to modify or bypass the supplied LCDI plug. If other devices on the circuit trip the breaker, Whynter recommends a dedicated circuit.

Whynter lists R-32 refrigerant. Its FAQ describes portable ACs as sealed refrigerant systems and says a recharge is not normally needed; suspected refrigerant leaks should be handled as a service issue rather than a DIY recharge. Whynter lists a one-year unit warranty and three-year compressor warranty, but warranty terms can vary by purchase and region, so check the documentation for your unit.
Who should buy the Whynter ARC-14S?
Consider it if you want a dual-hose portable AC and can accommodate its weight, window kit, and exhaust setup. It is most plausible for a room with a manageable layout where portable installation is useful and the compressor’s noise is acceptable. Look elsewhere if you need especially quiet bedroom cooling or prioritize efficiency while maintaining a set temperature: RTINGS’ test found substantial power consumption, and its review identifies compressor noise as a potential distraction.
When comparing alternatives, check DOE/SACC capacity, room layout, noise at both compressor-on and low settings, power-use test conditions, compressor type, and window compatibility. Current comparative prices are not established here, so compare current listings before making a purchase decision.
