There is no official runtime figure for Duracell batteries in an Xbox One controller. What the available runtime figure does—and does not—tell you
Xbox’s current Xbox Wireless Controller product page states “AA batteries for up to 40 hours of battery life.” The same page warns that battery life varies significantly with headsets, additional accessories, usage, and other factors.
That figure is an upper-limit claim for the current controller product line. It does not specify Duracell batteries, a particular AA model, or each Xbox One-era controller revision. Neither the reviewed Xbox nor Duracell product pages provide a controlled runtime comparison or an official Duracell-specific number of hours. Your actual play time can therefore be shorter or longer than the up-to figure.
Which Duracell AA options are listed for controllers?

Choose alkaline cells if you want disposable batteries; choose NiMH rechargeables if you have a compatible charger and want to recharge the cells. Compatibility as a suitable battery does not establish how long either option will last in your particular controller, and the available manufacturer information does not show that Optimum lasts longer than another Duracell AA model in an Xbox One controller.

What affects how often you replace or recharge them?
Xbox specifically identifies headset use, additional accessories, and usage as factors that can significantly change battery life. Consequently, there is no reliable way to turn the up-to-40-hour claim into a fixed number of days or weeks without knowing how and with what equipment you play.
How to use and replace the batteries safely
- Use the size and type specified by the controller manufacturer.
- Replace used batteries together rather than mixing old and new cells.
- Match the positive and negative ends to the markings in the battery compartment.
- Remove depleted batteries promptly. Duracell’s guidance is available in its battery care, use and disposal information.
- For rechargeable NiMH cells, use a compatible NiMH charger and follow its instructions.
Can you play without using AA batteries?
A wired connection is another option, but the appropriate cable and port depend on the controller revision. Microsoft’s 2013 announcement describes connecting the Xbox One controller by cable; check the port on your specific controller and use a compatible cable before relying on this method.
