To access files on a Samsung Galaxy, open My Files on the phone and tap Internal storage to browse its folders. To view or transfer files on a computer, connect the unlocked phone with a data-capable USB cable, allow access to phone data if prompted, and select the file-transfer USB mode.

Choose the right way to access your files

Method Best for What you need
My Files on the phone Finding, organizing, copying, or moving files on the Galaxy itself No additional hardware
USB connection to a PC Browsing or transferring accessible phone files in Windows File Explorer An unlocked phone and a USB cable that supports data transfer
External USB storage or SD card Moving files directly to removable storage A compatible USB drive or adapter; SD card support depends on the phone model

Menu labels and capabilities can differ by Galaxy model, carrier, software version, and region. If a label or feature is missing, check the manual or specifications for your exact device.

Find internal-storage files in My Files

  1. Open My Files. It is often in the Samsung folder; you can also search for the app on the phone.
  2. Tap a category such as Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, or Downloads to narrow the view, or tap Internal storage to browse folders.
  3. To organize an item, touch and hold the file or folder, select other items if needed, and choose Copy or Move. Copy keeps the original in place; Move relocates it.
  4. To create a folder, open the relevant location and use More options to find the create-folder command. The exact wording may vary.

Files downloaded through a browser or other apps are listed in My Files under Downloads. Some protected media may only open in the app that manages it because of copyright restrictions.

Browse a Samsung phone from a Windows PC over USB

  1. Unlock the Galaxy and connect it to the PC with a USB cable that carries data, not just power.
  2. If the phone displays Allow access to phone data?, tap Allow.
  3. Swipe down from the top of the phone screen, tap the USB connection notification, and choose Transferring files / Android Auto. If your phone shows MTP instead, select that file-transfer option.
  4. On the PC, open File Explorer and select the Galaxy device. Browse the accessible folders, then copy or move files as you would with other connected storage.

Samsung notes that a phone can appear by name on a PC even when its internal-storage folder does not: Samsung Australia’s troubleshooting guidance describes this issue. The folders may not appear until the phone is unlocked, data access is allowed, and file-transfer mode is selected.

Fix a phone that appears on the PC but has no folders

  • Unlock the phone and approve access. Keep the screen unlocked while reconnecting, and tap Allow if the data-access prompt appears.
  • Check the USB mode. Open the USB notification on the phone and select Transferring files / Android Auto or MTP, depending on the label shown.
  • Rule out the cable and port. Try a known data-capable cable and another USB port on the computer. Avoid an unpowered USB hub.
  • Restart both devices. Disconnect the cable, restart the phone and computer, then reconnect and check the USB mode again.
  • On Windows, check Samsung USB drivers. Samsung’s support guidance includes updating the drivers when Windows does not show the phone’s folders.

Samsung Canada also mentions Android File Transfer for Mac. That is regional support guidance, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current macOS version; check Samsung’s current instructions for your computer and phone before relying on a particular Mac transfer tool.
