The best way to digitize notes depends on how many pages you have and whether they are loose or bound. For occasional pages, scan with your phone. If you need to find words inside scans, add an OCR step and proofread its results. For a large stack of loose sheets, consider a sheet-fed scanner. A scan preserves the page as an image or PDF; it does not automatically produce accurate, editable handwriting.
Choose a digitizing method
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Phone scan in Apple Notes or Google Drive | Occasional pages, including notes in a bound notebook | Convenient for capture with a phone you already have. Apple says a scanned document is saved as a PDF in the note; check where Google Drive saves your scan and what file format it produces. |
| Mobile OCR for scanned PDFs | Finding or reusing words in a scan | OCR can make text searchable or copyable, but handwritten recognition can be wrong. Keep the page image or PDF and check extracted text. |
| Portable sheet-fed scanner | Many loose, unbound pages | Automatic feeding can reduce page-by-page handling; some models scan both sides. These feeders are not suited to intact notebooks or fragile originals. |
Scan occasional notes with your phone
Apple Notes on iPhone
Apple documents scanning text and documents in Notes with the iPhone camera. The scanned document is saved as a PDF in the note, which keeps a page-shaped record alongside its context. See Apple’s instructions for scanning in Notes.
Google Drive on iPhone and iPad
Google Drive provides a document-scanning workflow in its iPhone and iPad app. Follow Google’s Drive scanning instructions, then confirm the saved file and destination meet your needs.
With either phone workflow, check a representative page before scanning a whole notebook: make sure the writing is legible, the edges are visible, and the page is upright. Phone capture is most useful when the original is bound or you only have a few pages; it avoids feeding a notebook through hardware designed for separate sheets.

Add OCR when you need searchable text
Optical character recognition (OCR) attempts to extract text from a scan. Microsoft says OCR is built into the OneDrive mobile apps: open a scanned PDF to search, highlight, or copy text. Details are in Microsoft’s OneDrive OCR guide.
OCR output is not a reliable substitute for the original handwriting. Proofread names, dates, numbers, calculations, and cursive before relying on extracted text. If exact wording or visual layout matters, retain the scan as well as any OCR text.

Use a sheet-fed scanner for loose-page batches
A dedicated scanner makes more sense when you have many separate pages to process. Compare feeder capacity, whether the scanner captures both sides in one pass (duplex scanning), output formats, and compatibility with the computer or mobile device where you plan to store the files.
Epson WorkForce ES-60W
Epson describes the ES-60W as a portable sheet-fed scanner with Nuance OCR, searchable PDF and editable Word or Excel output, and an automatic feeding mode that combines multiple pages into one file. Epson also claims up to four seconds per page; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparative test. See Epson’s ES-60W product information.

Brother ADS-1300
Brother’s UK store page lists a 20-sheet automatic document feeder and a speed of up to 60 images per minute for two-sided color scanning under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. Treat that speed as a product specification, not a result independently verified across real-world note batches. Check Brother’s ADS-1300 listing for the model details.
Both examples are designed for separate sheets, not intact bound notebooks. Keep fragile originals out of a sheet feeder. Scanner features and availability can vary by region and model configuration.

Plan where scans will live
- Choose the destination first. Use a note-taking app if each scan belongs with contextual notes; use a folder or cloud library if your priority is archiving.
- Test one representative page. Check legibility, page edges, orientation, and whether any text you need is searchable.
- Name files consistently. Include a useful title or date, and use a small, predictable set of topic tags or folders.
- Keep the visual record. Retain the image or PDF when fidelity matters, even if you also save OCR text.
- Review OCR before depending on it. Correct errors in names, dates, calculations, and cursive writing.
Do not start a new workflow with Microsoft Lens
Microsoft’s iOS and Android support pages say Lens retirement starts January 9, 2026. Because retirement is underway as of October 2026, do not build a new note-scanning process around Lens; use a currently documented option such as Apple Notes, Google Drive, or OneDrive’s PDF OCR workflow instead. Follow Microsoft’s Lens for iOS guidance and Lens for Android guidance for current retirement details.
