How to melt ordinary ice

Confirm the block is ordinary ice, not packed ice or blue ice.

Place a light source, such as a torch or glowstone, near the ordinary ice. Block light is the relevant factor; sunlight alone does not melt it.

Allow the block to update and check whether it has turned into water. If it remains ice, try a closer or brighter block light source, then verify the block type and your edition/version.

The exact light level needed should not be treated as universal. A Mojang issue report, MC-217424, records version-specific behavior in which ice neither formed nor melted at block light level 10 in the listed Java versions. See Mojang issue MC-217424; the report is a reason to check your version, not a guarantee that one threshold applies to every edition.
Which ice blocks melt?

Why your ice may not be melting

It is packed ice or blue ice. These are separate blocks from ordinary ice, and light does not melt packed ice. Blue ice is also reported not to melt, though the evidence here is less conclusive.

You are relying on sunlight. The Minecraft Wiki search result says sunlight does not affect ordinary ice melting; use a nearby block light source instead.

The light level or version differs. Light thresholds are not safe to assume across all Java, Bedrock, and Education versions. If ordinary ice remains solid, try stronger or closer block lighting and check guidance for your exact version.

Your edition handles heat blocks differently. A Minecraft Wiki search result says Bedrock and Education may melt ice near a heat block even when it emits no light. Because that behavior is not confirmed here by a current official edition-specific reference, treat it as version-dependent and test it in your world.

Do you need Silk Touch?
No. Silk Touch is for harvesting ordinary ice intact, not for melting it. Minecraft’s official article says ordinary ice otherwise shatters when mined; a pickaxe with Silk Touch can preserve the block. If your goal is water, leave the ice in place and use block light instead.
