A jumper cap is a small removable conductive bridge that fits over designated pins on a circuit board. By connecting the pins, it closes a circuit and selects a hardware option defined by that device. The correct setting depends on the product’s manual; a cap’s position does not have a universal meaning.
What a jumper cap does
A jumper cap, also called a shunt jumper, contains a conductive connection that bridges the header pins it covers. The pins connect to a circuit, so bridging a specified pair changes a hardware setting. As Supermicro explains in its X14SBHM jumper settings, jumpers create shorts between two pins to change a connector’s function.
This is a physical hardware control, not a software setting. The board designer determines what the bridged pins do, and the product manual identifies the supported options.
How to read jumper positions
Two-pin headers
On a two-pin header, a cap covering both pins is “closed”; with the cap removed, the jumper is “open.” These terms describe whether the pins are electrically connected, not whether the whole device is powered on. Supermicro defines these states in its X14SBHM manual.

- Three Connector Types In One Kit: Includes 40 male-to-male, 40 male-to-female and 40 female-to-female jumper wires for connecting breadboards, female sockets, male headers, sensors, displays and controller modules during temporary prototyping
- 20 cm Length With Separable Ribbons: Each 8 in lead reaches across breadboards and nearby modules without excessive slack; use the 40-wire ribbons as grouped buses or peel off smaller sections and individual wires to match your project layout
- Color-Code Circuits & Troubleshoot Faster: Multicolored insulation makes power, ground, clock, data and control paths easier to identify during LED projects, sensor tests, classroom labs and repeated electronics experiments
- 2.54 mm Connections For Common Headers: Male pins fit compatible 0.1 in female sockets and breadboards, while female ends fit compatible 0.1 in male headers; insert connectors straight and check continuity if a signal becomes intermittent
- Copper-Clad Aluminum With PVC Insulation: The leads are designed for temporary low-voltage signal prototyping rather than mains or high-current wiring; they are not pure-copper wire, automotive jumper cables or a crimp-connector kit
Three-pin headers
A three-pin header may let the cap bridge either adjacent pair. For example, the manual may define pins 1–2 as the normal setting and pins 2–3 as an alternate setting. That arrangement is not a universal convention: consult the specific device’s pin table to learn which pair does what.
Find the pin-1 marking as described in the manual before changing a setting. On the Supermicro X14SBHM, pin 1 is identified by a square solder pad. Other boards may use a different marking or explanation.

What jumper caps are used for
Manufacturing or service modes
A jumper may select a special mode intended for a particular manufacturing or service task. For example, Supermicro documents a manufacturing-mode jumper on the X14SBHM: pins 1–2 are normal, while pins 2–3 select manufacturing mode. That assignment applies to that motherboard, not to jumper headers generally.
Clearing CMOS
Some boards document a jumper for clearing CMOS. In DFI’s CS181 manual, pins 1–2 are the normal position and pins 2–3 clear CMOS. DFI’s procedure is to power off and unplug the system, move the cap to pins 2–3 for a few seconds, then return it to pins 1–2 before reconnecting power. This is a model-specific example, not a safe universal procedure; use the instructions for your own board.

Products that do not need adjustment
Do not assume that every visible jumper block needs to be changed. Seagate’s Serial ATA Basics says its SATA drives have no jumper-block adjustments to make. Check the documentation for the exact drive or device instead of applying older hardware practices to a newer model.
How to handle a jumper safely
- Identify the device and header. Read the label next to the header and find the matching diagram or jumper table in the product manual.
- Confirm the current and intended positions. Check the pin numbers, pin-1 orientation, documented default, and function of the target position. Do not move an undocumented or reserved jumper.
- Follow the power instructions. If the manual requires disconnection, shut down the device and unplug it before moving the cap. Lenovo’s SR950 V3 instructions require users to turn off the server and disconnect power cords and external cables before moving jumpers; see its lower processor board switches documentation.
- Move the cap only as directed. Keep it on the exact pair specified and restore the normal position when the procedure says to do so.
- Reassemble and restart as directed. Reconnect power only after completing the device-specific procedure.
If a cap is hard to grip, Schneider Electric says needle-nose pliers may help when mounting jumpers on its Rack iPC Universal and Optimized systems. That is guidance for those product families, not a requirement for every board.

Replacing or sourcing a jumper cap
A replacement must fit the target header, but the sources cited here do not establish a universal jumper-cap size, pin spacing, or guarantee of compatibility across devices. Compare the replacement with the device’s documentation and existing hardware before using it. Even a cap that physically fits should only be installed in a position the manual documents.
