Clean your dog’s bed according to its care label: remove loose hair first, wash only the parts and materials the instructions allow, and let every component dry completely before your dog uses it again. As a practical baseline, the CDC’s 2026 pet-supplies guidance recommends cleaning pet beds and blankets weekly, or more often if they look dirty or smell bad.
How to clean a dog bed
A removable cover, cushion, waterproof backing, and any hardware may have different care requirements. Check the manufacturer’s tag or instructions for each part; a removable cover does not mean the whole bed can go in the washing machine.
- Check the care instructions. Confirm whether each component can be machine-washed, hand-washed, wiped, or dried in a machine. Follow any temperature or drying restrictions.
- Remove loose hair and debris. Vacuum the bed, especially seams, or use a lint roller, tape, gloves, or a pet-hair remover. The American Kennel Club (AKC) cautions that loose hair can clump when wet and contribute to washer clogs.
- Machine-wash washable soft pieces. If the care instructions permit, wash the cover, blanket, or other soft component with detergent. Choose a cycle and water temperature suited to the fabric. The CDC says fragrance- and dye-free detergent may be a better choice for pets with sensitive skin.
- Hand-wash suitable items that cannot go in the machine. If the material allows, scrub or knead the item in warm soapy water, then rinse until the soap is gone. For pet items without specific instructions, the CDC advises washing with warm water and soap or detergent, scrubbing, rinsing, and air-drying or wiping dry.
- Dry every part fully. Air-dry or use a dryer only if the care instructions allow it. Wait until thick cushions and fiber-filled components are dry all the way through before putting the bed back.
- Check the washer after laundering. If pet hair has collected, the AKC suggests checking the washer filter and wiping the seal.
How often to wash a dog bed
The CDC’s example schedule is to clean pet beds, blankets, and habitats every week. Clean more often when an item looks dirty or smells bad. The right interval can also depend on how the bed is used, its material, how much the dog sheds, outdoor activity, and household allergies. Treat weekly as a useful baseline, not a rule that fits every dog or bed. The ASPCA’s general dog-care guidance also advises washing a dog’s bedding often, but does not set a specific interval.
Cleaning versus disinfecting a dog bed
Cleaning physically removes dirt and germs using soap or detergent; disinfecting uses chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. The CDC says cleaning is usually enough for most pet items. It identifies pet illness, contact with poop or pee, and a household member at increased risk of serious illness as situations where more frequent disinfection may be appropriate.

For an accident, remove the waste and clean the bed in a way its care label permits. Fabric beds and liners may be washable, but do not assume hot water or any particular chemical is suitable for every bed. If you use a disinfectant, follow its label, keep pets away during use, and return the bed only when the label says it is safe; some disinfectants can be toxic while wet.
Vinegar should not be presented as a proven disinfectant. The CDC says, “Some websites may recommend vinegar as a pet-safe way to clean or disinfect items. However, there is currently not enough research showing how well vinegar removes dirt (cleans) or kills germs (disinfects).” Its guidance recommends soap or detergent for cleaning and disinfectants for killing germs.

Bed features and optional cleaning aids
Bed design affects how easy routine cleaning is, but it does not override the care label. The AKC describes plastic beds as comparatively easy to clean, elevated beds as often having wipe-clean fabric, and removable covers and blankets as easier-to-launder layers than bulky cushions. These are general design tradeoffs, not a ranking of specific products.

- Pet-hair remover or lint roller: Helps clear loose hair before washing; vacuuming, tape, and gloves are other options.
- Dog-bed laundry bag: The AKC suggests one to contain hair in the washer. Check that the bed fits and that both the bed and bag can be washed as instructed.
