Thundercomm’s RUBIK Pi 3 is an edge-AI development board built around Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QCS6490. It combines a manufacturer-rated 12 TOPS of on-device AI capability with 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, camera and display interfaces, and wireless networking. Thundercomm announced a $179 launch price in January 2025; that dated price is not confirmation of what the board costs today.

What the RUBIK Pi 3 is designed to do

The RUBIK Pi 3 is a single-board computer for development work involving edge AI, robotics, computer vision, and IoT. Its central processor is Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QCS6490. Thundercomm lists 12 TOPS of on-device AI capability, a vendor specification rather than an independent benchmark. That number alone does not establish how quickly a particular model or vision workload will run; software, model size, precision, and implementation all matter.

For a project, the practical question is whether the board’s AI software stack and physical interfaces match the intended workload. Check Thundercomm’s RUBIK Pi 3 product page and its current downloads and documentation before choosing a board revision or planning a deployment.

RUBIK Pi 3 specifications and connections

Component Thundercomm-listed specification
Processor Qualcomm Dragonwing QCS6490
AI capability 12 TOPS, as stated by Thundercomm; not an independently measured result in the cited materials
Memory 8 GB LPDDR4x
Storage 128 GB UFS 2.2
Video output HDMI 1.4 up to 4K at 30 Hz; DisplayPort over USB-C up to 4K at 60 Hz
Camera Two 4-lane MIPI CSI connectors
Expansion and wired connections USB-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet, M.2 Key M PCIe 3.0 x2, and a 40-pin header
Wireless Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.2
Dimensions 100 × 75 × 25 mm, according to the product page

The 8 GB memory and 128 GB storage specifications also appear in Thundercomm’s RUBIK Pi 3 documentation and downloads overview. The interface mix is useful for camera, display, networking, and expansion prototypes, but it does not guarantee that a specific sensor or add-on will work without driver or software setup.

Operating systems: check image availability for your revision

Thundercomm’s published OS information has changed over time and differs between official pages. The current product page lists Android 13, Qualcomm Linux, and Debian 13, and marks Canonical Ubuntu for Qualcomm platforms as planned. A March 2025 announcement described Linux as generally available and Android and Debian as progressing through release stages. In October 2025, Thundercomm announced an optimized Ubuntu image preinstalled on new boards and available to download.

These statements describe different points in the product’s release history; they should not be read as proof that every listed image is supported on every board revision. Before buying or re-imaging a board, use Thundercomm’s official downloads page to confirm the image, installation instructions, and revision-specific support you need.

Power use and thermal considerations

Thundercomm specifies USB-C Power Delivery at 12 V, 3 A. Its product FAQ estimates about 8 W without peripherals under full CPU/GPU/DSP load, about 4 W under full CPU-only load, and about 5 mA at 4.2 V in sleep. These are vendor estimates, not independent measurements, and the FAQ notes that peripherals affect power use. Size the power supply and cooling for the complete setup, not just the board.

Thundercomm’s product page lists an operating temperature of -20°C to 75°C, while its documentation overview lists 0°C to 50°C. Because those official pages conflict, the applicable range is not clear from the published specifications; seek confirmation from Thundercomm for a project where temperature limits matter.

Can you use Raspberry Pi accessories?

Thundercomm says many accessories from the Raspberry Pi ecosystem can be used, but compatibility is not universal and some accessories require software installation. Its FAQ specifically discusses supported camera modules, a fan, and a power supply. Confirm the exact model and required software against Thundercomm’s compatibility information before purchasing; a matching connector or form factor alone does not ensure support.

What the $179 announcement means today

Thundercomm’s January 9, 2025 launch announcement reported a $179 price and said the board was available globally through its official website and named distributors. The announcement listed WT Microelectronics, AIT, Atlantik, CODICO, ARROW, Macnica, OSCO, and Uniquest. This is a dated launch and distribution statement, not confirmation of present inventory, regional availability, or checkout price.

Published price Context
$179 Thundercomm’s January 2025 launch price; the March 2025 announcement also described it as the regular price
$159 Temporary Embedded World event offer announced by Thundercomm in March 2025
$99 Limited offer announced by Thundercomm in October 2025

Those are historical announced prices, not a current quote. Check Thundercomm or a distributor for today’s price, stock, shipping, and regional terms before ordering.

How to decide whether it fits your project

The RUBIK Pi 3 is most relevant when a project benefits from its Qualcomm platform, stated AI capability, camera connections, and onboard expansion. Compare it with other boards against the workload and the ecosystem you actually need, rather than choosing on TOPS or headline price alone.

  • AI workload: Confirm that your framework, model, and desired inference path are supported by the available software images. Treat 12 TOPS as Thundercomm’s specification, not a guarantee of application performance.
  • Memory and storage: Check whether the fixed 8 GB RAM and 128 GB UFS 2.2 meet your application’s needs and storage plan.
  • Camera and display: Verify sensor support for the MIPI CSI connectors and the display mode your project requires.
  • Power and cooling: Account for connected peripherals and sustained load; the vendor’s estimates vary by workload.
  • Accessory and software support: Confirm exact accessory models and image availability for the board revision you can buy.
  • Cost and support: Compare a live seller price and availability, plus documentation and community support for your intended stack. Thundercomm’s own comparison table is vendor-authored; the cited materials do not provide an independent comparative benchmark.

For a prototype that depends on supported Qualcomm software and camera or expansion interfaces, those checks can make the RUBIK Pi 3 a plausible fit. For a project whose priority is a mature, broad accessory ecosystem or independently verified performance in a specific workload, establish those requirements before selecting it.
