To turn this mode on or off, set the LockBatchFilesWhenInUse DWORD under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftCommand Processor to 1 or 0. You need administrator access to change this machine-wide registry setting.
What the setting does
Microsoft describes the mode as preventing batch files from changing while they execute. When code integrity is enabled, signature validation can happen once for a batch file instead of once for each statement. That is the security and performance rationale; Microsoft does not publish a benchmark showing a general speed increase on every PC. The relevant value is LockBatchFilesWhenInUse, a DWORD in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftCommand Processor. The Windows 11 Forum tutorial identifies 0 (off) as the default; use 1 to enable the mode. The feature is documented for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, all editions, in KB5083631, which lists OS builds 26100.8328 and 26200.8328. The tutorial also lists build 28000.2179 for Windows 11 version 26H1, so availability should be understood in that source and build context rather than assumed for every Windows 11 installation.
Enable or disable it with Windows Terminal
These commands write to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, so open Windows Terminal as an administrator. Either PowerShell or Command Prompt can run them.

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftCommand Processor" /v LockBatchFilesWhenInUse /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f - Check the command output for confirmation that the operation completed successfully. The value data should be
1when enabled or0when disabled.
The Windows 11 Forum tutorial, published April 17 and updated May 26, 2026, provides these commands and identifies the disabled state as the default: Turn on or off enhanced security and performance for batch and CMD files.
Use a .reg file or managed policy instead
Import a .reg file
A registry file can create the same DWORD and data value without entering a command. The setting and values are documented by Microsoft, but do not treat a third-party downloadable registry file as a Microsoft download. If Smart App Control blocks a downloaded REG file, the tutorial notes that it may need to be unblocked before it can be merged.

Manage devices through Application Control for Business
For centrally managed deployments, Microsoft documents LockBatchFilesWhenInUse as an application manifest control for Application Control for Business. This is the policy route for devices administered through application-control policy; use the local registry command when configuring an individual device directly. The available Microsoft documentation is in KB5083631.
Registry safety
Because this change edits the machine registry, verify the full key, value name, DWORD type, and intended data before applying it. Microsoft warns that incorrect registry edits can severely damage a system and recommends backing up valued data before changing registry settings. See Microsoft’s reg command documentation.
