If File Explorer freezes while you rename a file or folder in Windows 11, start by installing available Windows updates and restarting your PC. Those are sensible first checks, not a guaranteed fix for this specific problem: a rename freeze is a symptom, and Microsoft has not identified one cause that explains every case.
Why File Explorer may freeze during a rename
A freeze during renaming does not by itself identify whether the problem is a Windows issue, an interruption from background activity, or something specific to the files or folder involved. Microsoft has reported work to improve File Explorer responsiveness, including fewer freezes during renaming and changes intended to prevent background file synchronization from interrupting a rename. That update does not establish the cause of every freeze or confirm that the changes are installed on your PC.
In its August 17, 2026 post, Microsoft described a redesigned context menu as rolling out to Windows Insiders. Do not assume that feature or the reported improvements are available on every Windows 11 device; check your Windows version and update/build status. Read Microsoft’s File Explorer update.
What to try first
- Install available Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. Microsoft’s general File Explorer guidance recommends checking for updates, although its article focuses primarily on Explorer failing to open or start rather than freezing during a rename.
- Restart the PC. After updates are installed, restart Windows and check whether the same rename still causes a freeze. Treat this as an initial troubleshooting check, not a confirmed cure.
Microsoft’s File Explorer support guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 and recommends updates and a restart. Its PC-reset option is for a more serious failure to open or start; it is not an appropriate early step for a rename hang.

If the freeze continues
Check Windows system files
If updating and restarting do not help, Microsoft points users to its instructions for using System File Checker. Follow the official procedure rather than relying on commands from an unrelated troubleshooting post: Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting page links to the system-file guidance.
Send a useful report through Feedback Hub
If File Explorer remains unreliable, Microsoft recommends sending feedback through Feedback Hub. Include the exact steps that trigger the problem and what happens next. Note whether it affects one item or follows repeated or batch renames, whether the folder is local or synchronized, and whether Explorer recovers or closes. These observations help describe the issue; they are not established diagnostic tests.

How much can one reported crash tell you?
A Microsoft Q&A thread describes one user’s Explorer crash after renaming about 100–120 files, alongside a reported Explorer.exe GDIObjectLeak event. Replies suggest possible explanations and troubleshooting ideas, but the thread does not establish that a GDI-object leak, thumbnails, or any other suggested cause explains freezes on other PCs. The reported file count is one person’s experience, not a typical threshold or a Windows failure statistic. See the Q&A report.

Microsoft’s downloadable file-and-folder troubleshooter page lists Windows 10 as its supported scope and covers defined copy, move, rename, delete, and folder-view problems. The page also notes that MSDT is deprecated. It is not presented as a Windows 11-specific remedy for File Explorer freezing during a rename, so do not treat it as the targeted fix for this symptom.
