Check whether your MacBook Pro already has an SD card slot
Apple lists SDXC slots on 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, as well as some older generations. Check your Mac’s exact size and model year before buying a reader. Apple’s guide to using the SD and SDXC card slot on a Mac identifies compatible Mac models.
If your MacBook Pro has a suitable built-in slot, it can handle supported SD cards without an external adapter. An external reader may still be useful if you need another card format, want to read multiple cards at once, or prefer a hub that adds ports.
Which cards work with the built-in SDXC slot?
Apple says the applicable slot supports MMC, Default Speed, High Speed, UHS-I, and UHS-II cards. For MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, Apple specifies UHS-II support. The support page does not give a numeric transfer rate for the built-in slot, so do not treat theoretical card-standard speeds as a guaranteed Mac transfer rate.

- SD and SDXC: Use a card that fits the slot and matches the speed standard your workflow requires.
- microSD and MiniSD: Apple says to use an appropriate adapter to fit these smaller cards in the SDXC slot.
- SDIO: Apple states that SDIO cards are not supported.
- CFexpress: This is a separate format and requires a compatible external reader; it does not fit the built-in SDXC slot.
Best straightforward external option: Apple USB-C to SD Card Reader
For a MacBook Pro without an SDXC slot, Apple’s USB-C to SD Card Reader is the simplest directly supported choice in Apple’s accessories catalog. It connects through USB-C and is intended for SD card access. Confirm that the connector and supported card format match your Mac and card before purchase.
Apple’s listing establishes this as an available product option, not as a faster or better-performing choice than third-party readers. Choose it for a simple SD-card workflow and Apple’s direct accessory route—not on the assumption that it wins a speed comparison.

When a third-party reader or hub makes more sense
You use microSD or several card formats
A USB-C reader with SD and microSD slots can avoid carrying a separate microSD-to-SD adapter. If your camera workflow uses CFexpress or another format, verify that the reader explicitly supports that format; an SD reader cannot substitute for a CFexpress reader.
You need to read more than one card at a time
External multi-card readers can be useful when you need simultaneous access to multiple cards. Check whether the product supports the exact combination of formats and whether its slots can be used concurrently; having multiple slots does not by itself establish simultaneous operation.

You also need additional ports
A USB-C hub with SD or microSD slots may be more practical if you also need other connections. Compare the host connector with your MacBook Pro, then confirm card formats, slot count, and other ports against your actual workflow. Do not buy on a headline speed alone. Macworld gives theoretical maxima of up to 3,650 MB/s for CFexpress and 312 MB/s for UHS-II SDXC; those are standard-related theoretical figures, not measured results for a specific reader. Actual performance depends on the card, reader, Mac, and transfer conditions. Apple confirms UHS-II support on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later but does not publish a numeric slot rate on its cited support page.

Which option should you choose?
- Your Mac has an SDXC slot and you use SD cards: Start with the built-in slot; get an external reader only for a specific workflow need.
- Your Mac has no SDXC slot and you need SD access: Consider Apple’s USB-C to SD Card Reader as the straightforward option.
- You use microSD or multiple card formats: Choose a reader with explicit support for each format.
- You transfer from multiple cards or need more ports: Consider a multi-card reader or USB-C hub, verifying slot behavior and port compatibility before buying.
