For most Samsung refrigerators sold in the United States, set the refrigerator to 38°F (about 3°C) and the freezer to -2°F (about -19°C). Your model’s manual takes precedence if it recommends different settings. These are target settings—not the food-safety limits, which Samsung says are below 40°F for refrigerated food and below 0°F for frozen food.
Recommended Samsung refrigerator and freezer temperatures
Samsung’s general U.S. recommendation for most models is 38°F in the refrigerator and -2°F in the freezer. The setpoint is the temperature the appliance aims for; it does not guarantee that every shelf or food item is exactly that temperature.
Keep the recommended setpoints distinct from the food-storage limits Samsung cites: refrigerated food should stay below 40°F, and frozen food below 0°F. A reading warmer than either limit is a reason to lower the setting and recheck the compartment after it has had time to cool.
Why the recommended setting may differ
Samsung settings vary by market and model. For example, Samsung Canada recommends 3°C (38°F) for the refrigerator and -19°C (-2°F) for the freezer; Samsung UK recommends +3°C and -18°C. A Samsung-hosted manual for the Dacor RF7000AC family specifies 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer. These are recommendations for different markets or a specific model, not interchangeable settings for every Samsung refrigerator.

If your exact model’s manual gives a different recommendation, follow it. Some control panels show bars rather than temperatures, and Samsung advises checking the manual when the panel’s recommendation differs from its general guidance. How to change the temperature
There is no single button sequence for every Samsung refrigerator. The control depends on the model: some panels use Fridge and Freezer buttons, some use arrows and a selection or confirmation step, and some can be controlled through SmartThings. Older models may use the Fridge Manager app. Use the instructions for your panel in the manual if these examples do not match what you see.

- Identify your control type. Check the panel for Fridge and Freezer buttons, arrows, a menu or selection button, or app controls.
- Choose the compartment. On button-based models, press Fridge or Freezer. On some arrow-panel models, use the arrows to select Fridge, Freezer, or FlexZone.
- Set the desired temperature. On some models, each press changes the setting by one degree or one bar. On arrow-panel models, use the arrows to select a setting and confirm it or wait for the panel to accept it, as the manual directs.
- Allow the temperature to settle before judging the result. Avoid repeated adjustments while the compartment is still stabilizing.

How to check the actual compartment temperature
The display may show an average, not the temperature at every location. Samsung notes that the back and bottom can be colder, and opening the door admits warm air. To check the compartment rather than relying only on its display, use a refrigerator thermometer in the following way:

- INSTALLATION AND DIAGNOSIS – Disconnect refrigerator power before servicing. Inaccurate temperature readings or unstable cooling may also be caused by damaged wiring, fans, control boards or other components, so confirm the original sensor is faulty before replacement.
- Refrigerator: Put the thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment. Water helps reflect the temperature around stored food rather than a momentary air fluctuation.
- Freezer: Place the thermometer between frozen packages. Do not put it in water; the glass may shatter.
Samsung says an accurate reading can take up to eight hours with the doors left unopened. After changing a setting, wait 28 hours before checking again. If the refrigerator measures warmer than 40°F or the freezer warmer than 0°F, lower the relevant setting, wait 28 hours, and recheck. A basic refrigerator thermometer is an option for this check; no particular brand or model is endorsed here.

If a compartment remains above the cited storage limit after you have adjusted it and allowed the recommended wait, follow Samsung’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the displayed setpoint reflects the temperature everywhere. Persistent cooling problems may require service if troubleshooting does not resolve them.

Regional safety thresholds also differ in how they are expressed: Samsung Canada cites below 4°C (40°F) for refrigerated food and below -18°C (0°F) for frozen food. For U.S. guidance, Samsung reports the limits as below 40°F and below 0°F.
