Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo check a hard drive’s health, first make sure important files are backed up, then review its SMART status and run a manufacturer diagnostic such as SeaTools. A SMART warning or failed test calls for prompt data protection and drive-maker guidance; a passed test cannot guarantee the drive will keep working or rule out other system faults.
Before checking a drive, protect the files on it
Back up important files to a separate destination before running extended diagnostics or attempting any repair. Seagate’s Backup Plus Desktop manual advises backing up before drive tests. A separate external drive is one practical option; choose capacity and connection type for your own setup rather than assuming any one model is suitable.
If the drive is already making unusual noises, disappearing, or becoming difficult to read, prioritize copying irreplaceable files rather than starting a long scan. A test reads the disk for diagnostic purposes; it is not a substitute for a backup.
What a health check can—and cannot—tell you
Many drives report self-monitoring data through SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). A utility may show recorded SMART information, a status, or results from a drive self-test. The fields and features exposed vary by drive and utility, and an adapter or enclosure can affect whether health information is passed through. Seagate’s SeaTools 5 User Guide describes SMART information and notes that some features may not work with non-Seagate drives.

A SMART warning is a reason to act, not a countdown to a specific failure date. Seagate advises backing up as soon as possible after a system SMART error and maintaining consistent backups in its SMART error support article. The warning does not predict exactly when a drive will stop working, and a clean status or passed test is not a guarantee of future reliability.
Check a drive with SeaTools
SeaTools is Seagate’s diagnostic utility. Its official downloads page lists Windows, Linux, and bootable options. Confirm that the version suits your operating system and drive arrangement; features may be limited on non-Seagate drives, and an external enclosure or adapter may not expose all SMART data.

- Confirm the backup. Verify that the copy of your important files is current and stored separately from the drive being tested.
- Identify the correct drive. In SeaTools, check the listed drive details before starting a test, especially if multiple disks are connected.
- Review SMART information or run a SMART Check. SeaTools’ bootable manual says SMART Check examines the drive-maintained log. A failed result warrants preserving the backup and contacting the drive maker about replacement or warranty options.
- Choose a self-test suited to the situation. The short firmware self-test is quicker; the long generic test reads every sector and may take 3 to 5 hours per terabyte, according to Seagate’s SeaTools Bootable manual. Allow enough time for the long test to finish.
- Read the result and decide what to do next. Record any failure information and follow the maker’s support or warranty process. If the test passes but the symptoms continue, troubleshoot the rest of the system rather than treating the pass as proof that all is well.
Do not use erase, overwrite, or other destructive options as routine health monitoring. Seagate’s manual distinguishes data-safe tests from erase operations; an erase can destroy the data you are trying to protect.
Respond to a warning or failed test
If SMART reports an error
Keep the current backup safe and make another copy of any newly changed files if the drive remains readable. Seagate says there is no method to repair the underlying problem after a SMART error and recommends considering replacement. Its support article notes that an excessive average-temperature warning may sometimes be addressed by improving ventilation, but that does not make other SMART warnings safe to ignore.

If a diagnostic fails
Save the result and contact the manufacturer or seller about warranty coverage or replacement. Avoid repeated testing if it would put valuable, unbacked-up files at risk. Where the data is important and inaccessible, consider professional data-recovery help before further attempts to use or repair the drive.

A passed drive test does not exclude a loose or faulty cable, a controller problem, or an operating-system issue. Seagate’s drive troubleshooting guidance recommends considering these other causes when symptoms persist. Check connections and system-level causes carefully; if you are unsure, seek qualified support rather than making changes that could risk the data.

Seagate also says that over 30% of drives returned to it under warranty are in good working order with no problem found. The support article does not specify the period or methodology, so this figure describes Seagate’s warranty returns only; it is not a general failure rate and does not establish that a particular drive is healthy.
