Start by identifying the exact Radeon model and whether the slowdown affects one game or every game. Then check the game and driver notes, confirm that your card still has a compatible driver, and test with stock GPU and Radeon settings before changing anything else. A newer driver or one graphics tweak is not a guaranteed fix—especially if the card is no longer supported or another part of the PC is the bottleneck.

First, pin down what is stuttering

Before changing drivers or graphics settings, write down the information that will let you compare cause and effect:

  • Exact Radeon model, Windows version, game, and installed Radeon driver version.
  • Game resolution and the graphics settings you use.
  • When the issue began, and whether it followed a game patch, driver change, Windows update, Radeon profile change, or overclock.
  • Whether it affects one title or all games, and whether it is a brief hitch in a newly encountered area or persistently low frame rates.

That distinction matters: a problem limited to one title points first toward that game and its driver notes, while slowdowns across several games call for broader checks of drivers, system load, power, and hardware. AMD recommends checking that the affected game or application is current and reviewing the installed driver’s release notes for known issues (AMD troubleshooting guidance).

Check whether your Radeon still has driver support

“Older Radeon” is not specific enough to choose a safe driver. Look up the card’s exact product page on AMD’s support site and check that the offered driver supports both that GPU and your version of Windows. Support status differs by product and can change; do not assume a package listed for newer Radeon cards is appropriate for yours.

AMD says some Radeon generations are legacy products with no further planned driver updates. For those products, AMD recommends continuing with the existing driver or installing the final driver it made available. AMD also warns that installing newer Radeon Software on a legacy configuration may cause performance drops, game crashes, or system errors (AMD legacy graphics driver guidance).

If your card is legacy, treat its final supported driver—not the newest package for other products—as the baseline. Check the product’s current AMD page before changing versions.

Establish a stock-settings baseline

Remove variables before deciding that the GPU needs a new driver. If you have overclocked or undervolted the card, return it to stock while diagnosing; AMD lists unstable overclocking as a possible cause of system instability. Restore Radeon global and game-specific graphics settings to defaults as well. AMD says default driver settings provide most users a reasonable balance of visual quality and performance (AMD troubleshooting guidance).

Run the affected game and note what changes. If performance is still low, reduce one demanding in-game setting at a time—such as resolution or a costly visual effect—and compare the result. Lower settings trade image quality for performance, and Radeon software menus and features vary across GPU generations. There is no universal “best” preset for every older card.

Distinguish shader hitches from persistent low FPS

Games compile shaders, and AMD’s shader cache stores frequently used shaders so they do not have to be regenerated each time. A brief hitch during first use, or after a game or driver update, can therefore behave differently from continuously low frame rates. Note whether the hitch recurs in the same content or changes after you have encountered that content again; there is no fixed warm-up period that applies to every game.

Keep AMD’s default or optimized shader-cache behavior unless a documented issue for your particular game and driver gives you a reason to change it. Release notes show why matching the notes to the installed version matters: AMD’s Adrenalin 24.2.1 notes (2024) listed a shader-caching issue for Windows usernames containing accented characters and excessive micro-stutter after Fluid Motion Frames was enabled in select games (Adrenalin 24.2.1 release notes). Adrenalin 23.4.3 notes (2023) listed longer-than-expected first-launch shader compilation in The Last of Us Part I and stutter or performance drops on some RX 7000 extended-display configurations (Adrenalin 23.4.3 release notes). These are historical, version-specific examples; they do not establish that the same issue affects a different GPU or a current driver.

Check Windows load and power mode while the problem occurs

Low FPS is not always a GPU limit. Open Task Manager while the game is running and check the Processes and Performance views for unusually heavy CPU, memory, or disk use. Close only applications you do not need, and check whether updates or startup and background programs coincide with the slowdown. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 covers these performance checks (Microsoft tips to improve PC performance).

If background software appears to be interfering, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help isolate a conflicting service or startup program. Follow Microsoft’s steps for your Windows version, and use a normal startup afterward; a clean boot is a diagnostic, not a permanent way to run the PC (Microsoft clean-boot instructions).

On a laptop or another power-managed system, test Windows Best performance while plugged in if power limiting seems plausible. Microsoft cautions that this setting uses more power and can make a laptop warmer or drain its battery faster (Microsoft instructions for changing power mode). These checks help identify possible non-GPU limits; they do not guarantee an FPS increase. Microsoft also cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from general performance steps.

Update, clean-install, or roll back only when the evidence points to a driver

Use the timing and scope of the problem to choose the next step. If it began immediately after a driver change, the release notes identify a relevant issue, or the installation may be corrupted, a clean install or rollback is more targeted than repeatedly installing the newest package.

  1. Check the notes and support page. Match the installed driver’s release notes to the game and symptom. Confirm that the driver package supports your exact GPU and Windows version.
  2. Use AMD’s installer Clean Install when appropriate. AMD’s installer option attempts to remove detected Radeon software and drivers before installing the selected package. Follow AMD’s instructions for your Windows and GPU combination (AMD Radeon Software installation guidance).
  3. Use AMD Cleanup Utility if a separate cleanup is needed. This official standalone tool removes AMD graphics and audio drivers and software in preparation for a new graphics-software installation. Follow AMD’s current instructions; the utility article was last updated September 29, 2025 (AMD Cleanup Utility instructions).
  4. Roll back when a newer driver introduced the issue and no fix is available. AMD advises returning to the last graphics driver version where the problem did not occur. For a legacy card, do not substitute a newer package that does not support the product.

Do not treat a driver reinstall as a universal remedy. If the same problem remains with a supported driver and stock settings, continue investigating the game, system load, power, or hardware.

For crashes or system-wide instability, check the hardware path

If the symptoms include driver timeouts, crashes, or broader instability—not just low FPS—AMD’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the physical and system setup. These steps apply only where relevant to your configuration:

  • For a discrete graphics card, check that it is seated in the primary PCIe slot and that required power connections are secure. Shut the PC down and disconnect power before handling components; never open a power supply.
  • Verify that the power supply meets the graphics card’s requirements and that its connections are sound.
  • If the card is installed through a PCIe riser, temporarily test without the riser if doing so is safe and practical.
  • Patch the game and relevant software, and consider software conflicts or corrupted Windows system files if problems extend beyond one game.

AMD’s system stability troubleshooting guidance covers these checks. Do not handle powered components, and avoid physical work if you are unsure how to do it safely.

Know when tuning has reached its limit

If the exact GPU lacks current driver support, or the game’s requirements exceed what the card can handle at your desired resolution and settings, software tweaks may not deliver the result you want. A repair or replacement decision depends on the specific GPU, PC platform, game, target resolution and settings, power supply, case clearance, and budget; there is no responsible model recommendation or expected FPS gain without those details.

If Windows 10 is part of the setup, account for its support status: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That date does not by itself diagnose a Radeon performance problem, but the operating system and driver compatibility still matter when selecting a supported configuration.
