The Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 is a strong fit for small offices that print documents regularly and want fast rated speeds, generous paper capacity, duplex document handling, and refillable pigment-ink tanks. Epson rates it at 25 ISO pages per minute in both black and color; independent reviewers praise its document performance and running costs, but flag its large footprint, scan-processing limitations, middling photo color accuracy, and risk of clogging when left idle. Its value depends on how much you print, what you print, and the current prices of the printer and ink.
What the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 is
The US-model ET-5850 (product number C11CJ29201) is a four-function color all-in-one: it prints, copies, scans, and faxes. Its refillable tanks use four DURABrite pigment-ink bottles. Epson lists Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Wi-Fi Direct, mobile printing, and a 4.3-inch color touchscreen among its features. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. How well it handles office documents
Epson rates the ET-5850 at 25 ISO ppm for black and color printing, and 21 ISO ppm for two-sided printing. It lists a 500-sheet capacity across two front trays, plus a 50-sheet rear feed, and borderless printing up to 8.5 by 14 inches. Those speeds are standardized manufacturer ratings, not a promise that every job will finish at that pace; document complexity, settings, and the computer or network sending the job can affect real-world time.
RTINGS’ review, updated September 25, 2026, found the ET-5850 compelling for small offices, citing quick printing, sharp documents, superb page yields, and broad wired and wireless connectivity. It also reports an automatic document feeder (ADF) with double-pass duplex scanning. That means the feeder handles both sides of a sheet through two passes rather than capturing both sides in one pass. RTINGS’ ET-5850 review

Scanning and photos: important limits
Scans with fine detail or subtle backgrounds
RTINGS found that scan processing can remove background detail and fine elements such as graph lines or watermarks. If you routinely digitize archival material, graphs, marked-up pages, or documents with delicate backgrounds, inspect sample scans and the available processing options before relying on the ET-5850 for that workflow.
Casual photos, not professional color matching
RTINGS considers the printer suitable for casual photos but reports mediocre photo color accuracy for professional work. Its sharper strengths are document text and speed, not color-critical photographic output.

Ink, yields, and the real cost question
The replacement bottles are Epson 542 pigment ink: Black (127 mL), Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow (70 mL each). Epson states yields of 7,500 pages for black and 6,000 pages for color using its ISO/IEC 24712-based methodology. These are planning figures, not guaranteed results for an individual office: Epson says actual yield varies with images, settings, temperature, humidity, print frequency, and maintenance, and all colors must remain available for printing. Epson’s product and ink information
Epson advertises about 2 cents per color ISO page and savings of up to 80% against selected standard-capacity color laser cartridges. The comparison uses manufacturer online prices and yields for selected color laser printers available at retail, priced at $999 or less and rated up to 40 ppm; its cited data dates to July 2019. Epson also cautions that actual costs and savings vary considerably with print tasks, volume, and usage conditions. Treat those figures as Epson’s dated comparison, not a current universal cost-per-page guarantee.

To judge the economics for your office, compare the current local price of the printer and Epson 542 bottles with the consumables for competing models. Estimate your monthly black-and-white and color pages, and consider whether your jobs resemble the yield methodology or use more ink-heavy graphics and images. A high-volume tank printer’s low claimed running costs are most valuable when the printer is used regularly and enough to offset its higher upfront price.
Idle use and maintenance
RTINGS warns that the inkjet can clog if left unused and recommends regular printing. It also reports that the printheads are not user-replaceable. For an office that prints only occasionally, that maintenance risk weakens the case for choosing a tank-based inkjet; consider how consistently the machine will be used before buying.

ET-5850 versus alternatives
| Option | What the available comparison says | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 | Epson rates it at 25 ISO ppm in black and color. RTINGS finds it quick for documents, with sharp text and strong page yields. | Large footprint; double-pass duplex scanning; assess scan processing, photo color needs, expected volume, and current ink and printer prices. |
| Canon MAXIFY GX7020 | RTINGS describes it as slower than the Epson for documents and photos, but says it offers single-pass duplex scanning and substantially higher color page yield at lower color cost per print. | Compare current prices and the exact conditions behind the yield and cost figures against your own print mix. |
| Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5800 | Epson’s family page lists 25 ppm black and 12 ppm color, compared with the ET-5850’s 25 ppm black and color. | Check current configurations and prices; family-page pricing and availability can change. |
These comparisons do not establish which model is cheaper to own today. Upfront price, local consumable prices, monthly volume, black-to-color ratio, duplex scanning workflow, photo requirements, and footprint can change the better choice. Ink compatibility, support, and warranty
Epson warns: “Printer Designed For Use With Pigment Inks Only. Use of Dye Inks May Cause Damage not covered by the Epson Limited Warranty.” Epson strongly recommends genuine ink and says damage caused by non-genuine ink may not be covered. Use Epson 542 pigment bottles specified for this model; do not assume dye ink is compatible.
Epson’s ET-5850 support page links the user guide and US/Canada notices and limited warranty. Warranty duration depends on registration and the applicable terms, so check the document for your purchase region rather than assuming a coverage period. Epson’s support materials also address ink selection, printhead lines after cleaning, refilling, paper, and network and security topics.
Who should buy the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850?
It makes the clearest case for a document-heavy small office or home office that prints regularly, values speed and paper capacity, and needs a color multifunction machine with faxing and duplex document handling. The case is weaker for occasional printing, compact workspaces, archival scanning where subtle details matter, or professional photo color work. Before choosing it, compare current local printer and ink prices and check that the expected volume and print mix justify a tank system.
